Srinagar, Oct 5 (Agencies): Four Army personnel were today killed in an encounter with militants in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir. The encounter is still underway.
A militant was also killed in a separate gunbattle with security personnel in the Lolab area in the district.
The Army had launched an operation in the Haphruda forest in Handwara area after a tip-off about the presence of militants. Three army personnel lost their lives in the gunbattle with the militants, an Army spokesperson said.
"It is being confirmed whether the group of militants engaged in an encounter near the LoC had infiltrated into the Kashmir Valley yesterday (Sunday) or earlier," the officer added.
On Sunday, two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants were killed and a soldier was injured in an encounter in Pulwama district.
Pakistan-based JeM has been responsible for several major attacks in Jammu and Kashmir and on the attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001.
