North Korea to release detained South Korean student

Seoul, Oct 5 (IANS): North Korea will release a detained South Korean student later on Monday, South Korea's unification ministry said.

Pyongyang will free Joo Won-moon, a New York University student of South Korean nationality, who has been detained in North Korea since April 22, Pyongyang said in a notice to Seoul on Monday.

The notice said Joo will return to Seoul through the truce village of Panmunjom at 5.30 p.m. (local time), Xinhua news agency reported.

He was arrested for illegally crossing into North Korean territory from China's Liaoning province.

The ministry hailed Pyongyang's decision to return Joo, calling for the release of three other South Koreans who have been detained in North Korea.
