China to fight corruption in prisons

Beijing, Oct 5 (IANS): Chinese officials have been asked to fight corruption and other illegal conduct in its prison system.

Han Henglin, chief of discipline inspection, told officials that the prison system faces "a severe and complicated situation" in the fight against corruption, Xinhua news agency cited the Communist Party of China (CPC) website as saying.

Abiding by the rules must be incorporated into daily administration, education and promotion of officials in the prison system, Han said.

Since the new leadership took office in late 2012, the CPC has been engaged in a fierce anti-corruption campaign, taking down both senior leaders and minor bureaucrats.

In 2014, discipline inspection agencies investigated about 50,000 cases of minor violations and punished more than 20,000 officials.
