Chelsea backs under-fire coach Mourinho

London, Oct 5 (IANS): Chelsea football club on Monday backed under-fire head coach Jose Mourinho, whose side is in a turmoil due to the poor start to its English Premier League (EPL) title defence.

Chelsea have collected just eight points from equal number of matches this season and are 16th in the EPL standings, fuelling rumours of Mourinho's ouster.

"The club wants to make it clear that Jose continues to have our full support," Chelsea said in a statement, in support of the Portuguese tactician.

"As Jose has said himself, results have not been good enough and the team's performances must improve."

Chelsea management feels that Mourinho, former Real Madrid and Inter Milan tactician, has got enough arsenal in his bag to get the club out of the mess, despite a 10-point difference to league leaders Manchester City.

"We believe that we have the right manager to turn this season around and that he has the squad with which to do it," the statement added.

On Sunday, club captain John Terry also threw his support behind Mourinho, who is admittedly going through the "worst" period of his managerial career.

Terry, who is playing for the side since 1998, said this team is no different to the one that won the EPL title and urged his players to keep fighting.

"I have been here a long time and I have seen managers come and go and if anyone is going to get us out of this hole it is going to be Jose Mourinho," the 34-year-old defender said.

“Generally I think we are looking low on confidence but we have a big group of players in that dressing room and we need to stand up, which we will do. There is no difference from last season," Terry, who was benched for the last two matches before being fielded on Saturday, pointed out.

“We need to be hungry like we were. Like many teams find, it is difficult to come back after winning the Premier League, we have seen it with Man City," the former England captain reasoned.
