Body of Bengal CPI-M polling agent found on rail track

Kolkata, Oct 5 (IANS): The body of a CPI-M polling agent who went missing a day earlier was found on Monday on railway tracks near the Bidhannagar railway station, police said.

The family of Ujjwal Mukherjee and the CPI-M alleged he was murdered.

"Mukherjee's body was found on the railway tracks near the Bidhannagar railway station. The cause of death can be ascertained only after we get the post-mortem report," said a Government Railway Police officer.

However, family members claimed Mukherjee, who was the polling agent of CPI-M candidate Aloka Patra in the October 3 polls to the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, was assaulted by Trinamool Congress goons and was missing since Sunday.

"My son has been murdered but the GRP is forcing me to give in writing, accepting that my son died in an accident. I want an unbiased probe in the matter and those who killed my son should be punished," Mukherjee's father said.

Communist Party of India-Marxist state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra too claimed that Mukherjee was murdered.

"Mukherjee was assaulted during the October 3 polls by Trinamool goons and we suspect that he was murdered. Attempts are being to pass this as an accident," said Mishra.

The violence marred local body polls in Bidhannagar, Asansol and parts of the Howrah municipality have been mired in controversy with the West Bengal State Election Commission (SEC) deferring the vote count scheduled for Wednesday.

The postponement of the counting came following sustained demonstrations by the opposition Left Front and the BJP demanding cancellation of the entire polls.

The ruling Trinamool Congress on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the SEC demanding resumption of the counting process.

The Bidhannagar polls also hit the headlines for the wrong reasons, with 17 mediapersons sustaining injuries after being assaulted allegedly by Trinamool goons.

A section of the civil society and the media fraternity condemned the attack.
