16 campers missing in China

Beijing, Oct 6 (IANS): A search operation is underway to locate 16 campers who have reportedly lost contact at a nature reserve in China Guangxi Zhuang region, authorities said on Tuesday.

Jinxiu county authorities received a report of the missing campers at around 8.20 p.m. on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The 16 campers, mostly from the cities of Liuzhou and Hechi, arrived at Changtanhe nature reserve on October 2.

One of them called his wife on Monday morning saying that they were trapped in the camping site as the level of a river suddenly rose and were in need of immediate rescue.

Under the influence of typhoon Mujigae which made landfall n China on October 4, the county has been battered by rainstorms, a result of which rescue operations have been hindered.
