China issues smog alert for Beijing

Beijing, Oct 6 (IANS): China's weather observatory has issued a yellow alert for smog which is expected to hit capital Beijing and neighbouring regions, the media reported on Tuesday.

Beijing, Tianjin and parts of Hebei, Liaoning and Shandong provinces will be shrouded by smog until Tuesday, the National Meteorological Centre (NMC) said.

China has a four-tier colour-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe weather, followed by orange, yellow and blue, the Global Times reported.

The alert was issued on Monday evening.

The NMC warned people in the affected areas to reduce outdoor activities.

It is forecast that air quality in the Chinese capital would improve from Wednesday night, the NMC added.
