Doctor among four arrested for foetal sex determination

Gurgaon, Oct 6 (IANS): Four people, including a doctor, have been arrested in Delhi in an operation led by the Gurgaon district administration for their involvement in sex determination of foetuses, an official said on Tuesday.

The doctor, identified as Neeraj, and his associates Sandeep Kumar, Durgesh Singh and Om Prakash were arrested and an ultrasound machine seized from them on Monday night, Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner T.L. Satyaprakash said at a press conference on Tuesday.

A first information report (FIR) has been registered against the accused at the Uttam Nagar police station in Delhi.

The Gurgaon administration team comprised deputy civil surgeon Saryu Sharma, drug control officer Amandeep Chauhan, secretary of the district Red Cross Society Shyam Sunder Sharma and child development project officer (CDPO) Prabha Yadav.

Officials of the Delhi government -- Patel Nagar sub divisional magistrate Vivek Kumar and nodal officer Kailash Shekhar -- accompanied by police personnel were also part of the operation.

Satyaprakash said the team conducted a 'sting operation' on a woman named Rajrani who was acting as a tout for sex determination of foetus.

A decoy called Rajrani and requested her for sex determination on a 'customer' provided by the CDPO.

She called both the people to Najafgarh, and told them to meet a man named Sandeep Kumar who will take them to the clinic in Uttam Nagar, where sex of the foetus will be determined.

Sandeep Kumar then called Durgesh Singh and asked the decoy to pay him Rs.10,000. He then took the decoy patient to a clinic named M/s Family Health Centre, where the doctor conducted an ultrasound on the patient.

No entry was made in the clinic register, nor was any form filled.

The officials reached the spot and nabbed the people red-handed with the currency notes given by the decoy patient whose numbers were earlier noted down.
