After Nayantara Sahgal, Ashok Vajpeyi returns Akademi award

New Delhi, Oct 7 (PTI): After eminent writer Nayantara Sahgal, former Lalit Kala Akademi chairman Ashok Vajpeyi has returned the Sahitya Akademi Award to protest the "assault on right to freedom of both life and expression".

Voicing displeasure over the Dadri lynching incident and and a string of killings of rationalists, he also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's continued silence on these.

"Sehgal was right. He is a very loquacious Prime Minister. Why doesn't he tell the nation that the pluralism of this country will be defended at every cost?" Vajpeyi told PTI today.

The 74-year-old Hindi poet, essayist and literary-cultural critic disapproved of statements by senior leaders, including Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma which, he said, "belittled the "multi-cultural and multi-religious" fabric of the country.

"There are the comments made by the Culture Minister about renaming Aurangazeb road to APJ Abdul Kalam road. He says Kalam was a great nationalist despite being a Muslim. These kinds of statements belittle the multi-cultural and multi-religious fabric of the country....What can writers do but protest," he said.

Yesterday, Nayantara Sahgal, the 88-year-old niece of Jawaharlal Nehru, had announced her decision to return her Sahitya Akademi award. In an open letter titled "Unmaking of India" she had referred to the Dadri lynching of a Muslim man by a mob over suspicion of eating beef, and also the killings of Kannada writer M M Kalburgi and rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare.

Sehgal had also questioned the silence of PM Narendra Modi on these incidents.

"This is in solidarity with writers and intellectuals being murdered in broad daylight...," Vajpeyi said.

He also expressed disappointment over the failure of the Sahitya Akademi to "rise to the occassion" to protect the autonomy of writers.

"The Sahitya Akademi has failed to rise to the occassion. They have not protested against what has been happening to the the writers' autonomy. The writers' community should rise in protest," Vajpeyi said.

BJP came into power only because of Mr.Modi. It seems he is allowing others to run the government.Day by Day we are losing some of our rights. Nothing seems to change for better for the common man. No one listen to our voice. Might is Right now.

India is not becoming a fascist regime, neither is Modi doing anything wrong. When Gujarat riots happened everyone balmed Modi. When something happens in UP why is Akhilesh Yadav not targeted and instead everything is blamed on Modi?? The main culprit behind all these tensions is the Media. Media should tell the truth but Indian media is igniting tensions without evenv veryfying the news. Was the guy really killed for eating beef or for stealing a cow? Forget the courts and the law, Indian media has already given its judgement. Blame everything on Modi is the new mantra for the media.
Does the media raise the issues of Hindu harrasement?? Why has it forgotten Assam riots , Muzzafarpur ?? All those events killed more people and was more communal than the recent incident in Dadri. No doubt some people ignite tensions on purpose. Arrest them, file a case and let courts take action. Dont sit on talk shows and rant your judgements on them. Why did the above persons not return these awards when Kasmiri pundits were killed??? did anyone bother to raise a voice for them?? even now they are not allowed to return to Kashmir, thier home state. Did anyone return their awards when Bombay riots occured?? or when Babri masjid was taken down?? when sikh riots occured?? when Assam riots occured??? Name one person and I will take all my words back. Simply blaming everything on Modi is not right. Tommorow you will even say there is no waster in Thumbe dam and blame it on Modi. Not that he does not connect with people , unlike the previous PM. But he will not speak about support or against any community and spur up more voilence.

    Dear Dr. Kamath,

Very well and balanced statement from you makes the justice. To support your statement, here goes
a lovely Poem by Shri Rabindranath Tagore:

*Go not to the temple to put flowers upon the feet of God, (First fill your own house with the Fragrance of love... )
*Go not to the temple to light candles before the altar of God, (First remove the darkness of sin from your heart...)
*Go not to the temple to bow down your head in prayer,
(First learn to bow in humility before your fellowmen... )
*Go not to the temple to pray on bended knees,
(First bend down to lift someone who is down-trodden...)
Go not to the temple to ask for forgiveness for your sins,
(First forgive from your heart those who have sinned against you... )

For Pappu's rally in Karnataka on Saturday, crops have been cleared before harvest from an area the size of roughly three football fields.
A stage is being put up in farm lands near a village in Ranibennur in central Karnataka. Maize grown on four acres of land reportedly belonging to one farmer has been destroyed.

Welcome pappuman, who is landing in Karnataka to solve farers problems.

India is becoming a fascist regime, and becoming pre-world-war Germany and Italy. Hating Jews exceedingly and propagating superiority of a particular way of life was the main stay of Nazi Germany also.

Its time we wake up and protest as we protested the dictatorship of Indira Gandhi. She was trained as a democrat and relented fast. But this regime may be more stubborn.

Don't bother answering because I can guess it.
As a doctor you should know better that what happened in Dadri is only a symptom of a deeper disease !!! It is the disease and the people responsible for it which needs to be destroyed/nipped in the bud !

For the next three and a half years of Modi Sarkar, Gua-Vikas will be the only priority.

Government will be busy drafting papers to cow as the national animal instead of the lion.

The highest priority job of police force will be to catch vehicles carrying beef. Forensic labs will be busy identifying whether vehicles are carrying buffalo meat or cow meat or goat meat.

Employment will be generated by employing workers to extract gold out of cow urine using Baba Ramdev's formula.

ISRO will dedicate a department to research benefits of cow excreta including its use for cryogenic rocket fuel. Modiji will make a new announcement that 15 lakhs will be deposited only in accounts of those people who swear by the cow and not the Indian Constitution.
