58 militants killed in Afghanistan operations

Kabul, Oct 7 (IANS): At least 58 Taliban militants have been killed in cleanup operations in 10 provinces out of Afghanistan's 34 provinces, Defence Ministry said on Wednesday.

"Within the past 24 hours, 58 terrorists were killed, and 38 were injured in cleanup operations. Army personnel seized weapons and ammunition in addition to defusing several landmines and roadside bombs," Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying in a statement.

A total of five army personnel were also killed over the same period, the statement said.

The Taliban-led violence continues in Afghanistan. Afghan security forces have pressed on clearing the militants in restive provinces as they assumed the full security charges from NATO-led troops since January 1.
