Police officer killed in Kashmir militant attack

Srinagar, Oct 7 (IANS): A police officer was killed in militant firing on Wednesday in Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district.

Authorities at the Srinagar army base hospital informed IANS that the police officer was declared brought dead even though he was airlifted to the hospital.

A squad of the Special Operations Group of the state police was fired upon by militants in Dachina village in Bandipora district Wednesday afternoon, a senior police officer told IANS here.

Police sources said the squad had gone to the village after receiving intelligence reports that Apu Qasim, the mastermind of the August 5 Udhampur terror attack, was hiding in the village.

"Reinforcements have been rushed to the spot to ensure that the militants responsible for the attack are prevented from escaping."
