Mob attacks police station in Poonch, injures six

Jammu, Oct 8 (IANS): Half a dozen policemen were injured on Thursday when a mob attacked a police station in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, police said.

A group of Potha village residents, irate over detention of some people from the village for questioning after a rape and murder accused escaped from police custody, attacked Surankote police station, a senior police officer told IANS here.

"Around half a dozen policemen were injured after some villagers pelted stones on the police station to protest detention of locals.

"Some locals were in constant touch with the accused. So we detained them for questioning," the officer said.

The villagers also blocked Poonch-Surankote road during the protest.

The officer said efforts are on to nab the fugitive.
