Delhi government orders probe into Tihar gang war incident

New Delhi, Oct 8 (IANS): The Delhi government on Thursday ordered a probe into a fight between two groups in the Tihar jail here, in which two inmates were killed and over a dozen others injured.

"We have ordered an inquiry into the incident. We will not hesitate to take action if anyone is found guilty," Delhi Home Minister Satyendra Jain said on Thursday.

The minister said that 11,000 of the 14,000 inmates in south Asia's largest jail complex were undertrials.

"The Supreme Court has said that jail should be the last resort. We can't let them (undertrial prisoners) languish in jail. I have written a letter to the union home ministry regarding this," Jain said.

Two inmates were killed and over a dozen undertrials and Tihar jail staff suffered critical injuries after two groups of inmates fought inside the high-security prison on Wednesday.
