New rules not in conformity with Roman Catholic belief
New Delhi, Oct 11 (DHNS): The Missionaries of Charity, which was founded by Mother Teresa, has opted out of adoption service, because the new guidelines for adoption are not in conformity with belief of the charity inspired by Roman Catholic religious views.
The charity has applied for de-recognition of its centres registered with the government. The government is likely to move the kids of these centres to some other centres.
New rules
The new guidelines allow single parents (bachelors and divorced) to adopt kids.
This is in conflict with the views of Roman Catholic Church which does not recognise parenthood outside marriage.
Thus, the charity cannot give children to single parents.
Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi is stressing on the strict compliance of the guidelines for adoption. She also says that the guidelines are in conformity with secular ideals.
A sister from one of the centres of the charity in Delhi, who did not want to be identified, told Deccan Herald that they have stopped offering kids for adoption. She refused to give further details.
A senior official involved with the adoption of children said that the charity has written to the Central Adoption Resource Agency (CARA). He said that the Missionaries of Charity have written for de-recognition of its 13 centres.
He also said that charity’s withdrawal from adoption service will not harm the cause because many other NGOs are ready to take up the task.
Addressing a national conference in Delhi, Maneka Gandhi told states to implement the new guidelines and asked them to set up Specialised Adoption Agency (SAA) in each district.
Currently, a total of 278 SAA are present.
