Voices not raised after Emergency, Muzaffarnagar riots: Ravi Shankar Prasad

New Delhi, Oct 14 (PTI): Union Minsiter Ravi Shankar Prasad today questioned eminent writers for returning awards to protest against Kannada author Kalburgi's murder and Dadri lynching, telling them that such voices were "not heard" after incidents like Emergency and Muzaffarnagar riots.

"...One thing does pain me sometimes. A number of big incidents happened in the country earlier, also but at that time people did not return (awards).

"During Emergency, democratic rights including press freedom were violated on such a large scale. But these kinds of voices were not heard then. Such a massive riot happened in Muzaffarangar one and half years back and the way the (state) government (of Samajwadi Party) worked there was in an enitrely discriminatory manner. At that time also such protest was not seen," Prasad told reporters at the Cabinet briefing.

He however asserted that "we honour the scholars but will like to tell them very politely that if they get award, they have got it on the basis of their ability and knowledge on which everyone takes pride."
The Union Minister, however, refused to take further quesions syaing he does not intend to enter into a debate on the issue at this podium.

"I would not like to say anything on it. Cutlure Minister (Mahesh Sharma) has already spoken on it," he said.

Asked about the Opposition criticism of the government on Dadri incident, Prasad sid that both the Prime Minister and BJP chief Amit Shah have spoken over the issue.

"Even after that some people do not desist from criticism. What can we do? The primary responsibility for Dadri incident was on Uttar Pradesh government. Their initial response was also not good.

"They should have taken action. We condemn it. Action should be taken against those involved in it," he said.

Prasad's remarks comes after eminent author Shashi Deshpande said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's comment on the Dadri lynching incident was "far too weak."

The eminent author, who had resigned from the general council of the Sahitya Akademi expressing "disappointment" over PM's silence on Kannada author Kalburgi's murder, said that Modi has used a very weak word, "unfortunate", to term the lynching incident.

At least 27 writers, poets, playwrights and translators have so far returned their Sahitya Akademi award with Punjabi writer Dalip Kaur Tiwana handing over her Padma Shri award against the "rising intolerance" in the country.

Prasad did not take any questions on Shiv Sena's paint attack on Sudheendra Kulkarni. Responding to questions on the Prime Minister hosting the family members of Subhas Chandra Bose at his residence today, the Union Minister said that members of Netaji's family had expressed concern over the facts related to the death of the leader and hence the PM is meeting them.

"Our government honestly accepts it that irrespective of whichever ideology one belonged, all those who fought for the nation should be respected. That is why we are also planning to celebrate Sardar Patel's birth anniversary on October 31 in a big way."

What Jaitley 7 Ravis shankar want to say is that no one should protest or criticize his government for it's failures.

Only BJP (when not in power) has the right to protest against and criticize the ruling government.

They accept only fake praises in favour of feku government.

Ravi Shanker has made an absurd statement. Writers, artists, rationalists have been executed mafia style. The Academies have gone on mute mode. In that situation scholars and artists have done the right thing by returning their awards given by these academies who have now gone mute. They did that in 1975 when the emergency was d and they did that in 1984 after the Delhi riots. Politicians like Jaitley should stop making absurd statements.

Instead of finding fault eminent writers for returning awards, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad should genuinely introspect:-
1.Over the period of time, whether, intolerance in the country worsened or improved?
    2. Whether law and order in the country improving or worsening?
    3. Whether values in the lives of people improved or worsened?
    4. Cost of living increased or decreased?
    5. There are 45 lakh cases pending in 24 high courts. Whether are we going to increase the pendency or reduce?

What Academy awardees were doing when Syrian Boy Alian Kurdi was lying dead on sea shore because of terrorism. That boy too human and innocent right? Why didn't return award when Nirbhaya incident happened in Delhi. Why they were silent when many soldiers lost life guarding border. Are they expecting big riots to occur? OR some party is demanding Return Meal for award granted earlier? OR strategy to get media coverage so to remind public? Is this protest happening because peace is prevailing across the country after Modi into power.

Minister is talking logic. His question is very simple.
He is asking "Your mother died now, you are crying. 10 years back, your father died, why you did not cry then ?

During Emergency why all your RSS people were hiding in some rat holes. Many RSS leaders secretly met Indira Gandhi and had a secret understanding with her, and then RSS people spread a news among their cadre that since Indira is a Brahmin she should be supported, or else if the Govt changes some Dalit or Minority man may become PM of India and we upper caste people will have to lick the feet of Dalit or Muslim. How you have forgotten this secrete understanding with Indira Gandhi during Emergency?

    Dear minister
Just do not ask the public. You have not even answered the questions from public. You will get the answer from those intellectuals who returned the awards, Ask them and then tell us what is their answer for your question. Asking public and running away from questions does not give you respect as minister.

The voices were not raised when Aurangazeb invaded India, your party erazed Babri Masjid etc etc...That is not the question today. We do not live in the past but learn from the past. So today its important to know what you are doing to curb these unruly elements in your own backyard. Do not vitiate the topic as you normally do but address the issue sir...

Minister's question has logic. He is asking something like this: "During UPA 10 year rule, Daal price had gone up 4 times from 20 to 80 and you did not complain. Now it has only gone up 3,5 times from 80 to 280 in 17 months. Why do you complain now ?

Mr. J.anata - Goat and Sheep also give milk. Goat milk is very popular in UP-Bihar as tea & coffee made from goat milk is more tastier than Cow/Buffalo milk. Paneer & Khova and Rasagolla made from Goat & sheep milk is also having better taste than Cow/Buffalo milk. Goat & Sheep also give Gobar like Cow as you said. Besides Sheep gives Wool which Cow cannot give to protect the people in Cold Area. Without Wool people of Cold Area would have died of biting cold which goes below Zero degree in Kashmir & other adjacent states. Cow cannot protect people's lives in such a way. So,Sheep is more useful than Cow. So why sheep slaughter also should not be banned ?
