Merkel's 126 party colleagues oppose her refugee policies

Berlin, Oct 14 (IANS): At least 126 politicians of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) called on their party leader to change her course on refugee policies, according to a media report.

The dissent in the CDU over Merkel's policies on the refugee issue is widening, according to the report. Last week, the three-page urgent letter to Merkel contained only 34 signatures.

The 126 signatories now, who all are CDU function or mandate holders, include 38 members of German parliament, German newspaper Bild reported on Wednesday, Xinhua news agency said.

Their main demand is the closure of German borders to refugees who have come from safe third countries to Germany, said the report.

"This should be practised at least as long as the Schengen external borders are actually open and the other Schengen states do not comply with their obligations under European law," the urgent letter said.

However, the notion of rejecting refugees at the border was thrown out by Merkel at a CDU meeting with its Bavarian CSU sister party on Tuesday in the Bundestag.

As German media reported last week, the original three-page letter signed by 34 members of Merkel's conservative CDU party said the chancellor's refugee policies disregarded party principles and broke the law.
