Mangaluru, Oct 16: A protest will be held at DC office in city on October 19 at 10.30 am followed by a march from clock tower against the alleged negligence of Lady Goschen hospital, which caused death of a young woman who was admitted for delivery. This was revealed at a press meet held here at press club on October 16.

Madhavi, wife of Thimmappa Gowda and a resident of Tenkamijar, had got admitted to Lady Goschen hospital on September 27. The same day, she delivered her first child, a healthy boy. However, the next day she suddenly developed complications and was operated upon. She was shifted to Wenlock and then to a private hospital, where she breathed her last.

Addressing a press meet, ZP member Janardhan Gowda alleged that the hospital's negligence had caused Madhavi's death. He claimed that after the delivery, her family members were not allowed to see either Madhavi or the baby even till evening.

On September 28, Madhavi suffered heavy bleeding and was operated upon. As her condition worsened, she was shifted to Wenlock hospital, but due to unavailibility of specialized doctors, she was again shifted to a private hospital. She failed to respond to treatment and passed away on October 5, said Janardhan Gowda.

He pointed out that despite having a tie-up with a private hospital, Madhavi was taken to another private hospital and the bill came up to Rs 2.4 lac. Even though the family belongs to BPL category, they did not receive any government benefits, Gowda claimed, adding that after Madhavi's family members and he himself requested the hospital to reduce the bill, a discount of Rs 25,000 was given.

"Madhavi had a normal delivery and then developed heavy bleeding. The doctors at Lady Goschen hospital operated upon her, but there was much delay in informing the same to her family members even though they were in the hospital itself. Only PG doctors and nurses were present during the delivery and there was no specialized doctor," he alleged.

He also said that a complaint in this regard has been given to the deputy commissioner, who has ordered an enquiry into the case. "Doctors and hospital staff who are found guilty of negligence should be punished and a suitable compensation should be awarded to the bereaved family," Janardhan Gowda demanded.

Harinakshi, secretary of Kudmi mathra sangha, Dinesh Kumar Kodikal, social worker and others were present.
