Kundapur, Oct 16: A youth was killed in a tragic hit-and-run accident on national highway 66 in Yadthare gram panchayat limits at Byndoor here on Friday October 16.
The deceased has been identified as Asangi (24), a resident of Guledagudde, Badami. He was employeed as a coolie worker in Manipal.
It is learnt that Asangi had been to his hometown in Badami and on the night of Thursday October 15, he was returning to Manipal. The bus he was travelling in stopped for a break at a restaurant in Yadthare, and when Asangi got out and was crossing the road to answer nature's call, an unidentified speeding, recklessly driven vehicle rammed into him and sped away without stopping, it is surmised. His body was crushed in the accident.
Sadly, as it was dark, no one including those in the bus noticed the accident. Even the conductor of the bus failed to note the absence of the passenger and the bus moved on.
The vehicle that hit Asangi is yet to be identified.
Byndoor police have registered a case and a team led by SI Santhosh Kaikini has begun a search for the killer vehicle.
Meanwhile Asangi's family members from Badami came to Byndoor on receiving the tragic news. The police have handed over the body to the family.
Apart from being a coolie worker, Asangi was also pursuing a diploma course in Manipal. He leaves behind his mother and a younger brother.
