Mangaluru, Oct 17: District superintendent of police (SP) Dr Sharanappa on Saturday October 17 launched the upgraded version of the Dakshina Kannada police blog (http://dkpolice.blogspot.in/) and also its Facebook and Twitter pages.
Addressing the media after the launch at his office, SP Sharanappa said, "The objective of launching social media pages and upgrading our blog is to spread awareness among the people about the functioning of the district police, to foster communal harmony and take police closer to the people with the motto of 'with you and for you'.
"This blog mainly contains information about police officers, police stations, crimes, history of DK police, road safety, cyber crime, childline, RTI and so on. The blog will be updated twice a day - before 10 am and between 6 and 7 pm," he added.
"On our social media pages, people can openly discuss and send information and videos that are of public interest. The Twitter page will be used only to tweet important things. The PSI rank officers will have access to the Twitter page and the SP and team will monitor it," he said, adding, "We will soon inform all the colleges also about this."
To a query, he said that plans are afoot to start a social media surveillance cell in the district at the range or district level, once permission is obtained from higher officers.
To a question on the recent firing at Rajdhani Jewellers in Puttur, the SP said, "The firm has five partners and one of them was getting calls from underworld element Kali Yogish, but he did not give any complaint about it, and he even denied getting the calls. But we know who is behind it and we are seaching for the culprit."
He also said that the police department has submitted a proposal to the DC to install 60 CCTV cameras in the district. "CCTVs help in solving and controlling crimes. The 67 CCTVs already installed in the district have helped us crack 18 cases," he said.
ASP Rahul Kumar, ASP Vincent Shanthakumar and others were present.
