Kasargod: Two brothers, aged 8 and 4, drown in pond near mosque

Kasargod, Oct 22: In a tragic incident, two children drowned in a pond at Thalangara here on Thursday October 22.

The deceased have been identified as Altaf (8) and his brother Atif (4), sons of Anwar and Reshma from Deralakatte, Mangaluru.

The children along with their mother and grandmother had been to Malik Deenar mosque for 'ziarat'. While the two ladies stood near the mosque, the children went off to see a pond located nearby.

A few minutes later, the children began screaming for help and people who were around rushed to their rescue and pulled them out of the water. The boys were rushed to hospital but they could not be saved.

It is learnt that October 22 being holiday for schools, Reshma along with her sons had come to her mother's house at Kasargod Chowki.

The bodies were shifted to Kasargod general hospital.

Kasargod town police have registered a case.

    We live by the riverside which is hardly 25 meters from our house.Our parents taught us swimming when I was 5 years old.Even my sisters learnt swimming at an young age..But now a days I see our neighbours are not teaching their kids this essential skill fearing that if they learn swimming they will go in the water..What a change in mentality over the years..To challenge them I have taught swimming to my kids at the age of 4 and 6 ....how about not learning driving for the fear of accidents ???

    Dear Rajesh,

    If not learnt at all then definitely afraid to go inside in the water, mean prevention is better than cure.
    I think in this matter you are right. One should know the art and stick to limitations.

    Every day we see young boys and girls dying while trying to swim in ponds, rivers, seas. Yet there is no awareness by the media. This issue should be highlighted in all public places so that people are aware of the dangers of swimming. Parents should warn children not to go in the waters without adult supervision.

    Very sad! Parents take care your precious children. They are Godly. May be their parents had many plans everything lost now. but hope for the best May God only console them. May the souls rest in peace God may give the strength to their parents to bear this great loss.
