Media Release

Mangaluru, October 23: KMC Hospital part of Manipal Health Enterprises- South India’s largest healthcare chain announces the launch of the first of its adolescent clinics in Mangaluru called 'Happy Teen'.

This clinic is a one stop solution to tackle adolescent related issues faced by children of the age group 10 -18 years. This new initiative comes in line with integrating all medical services specialized to the needs of children and now adolescents.

It is a well-known fact that adolescence is the most fascinating and challenging period of life extending from 10 to 18 years. ‘Typically adolescence can be divided into 3 periods according to the stages of development. They are early (10-13 years), middle (14-16 years) and late adolescence (17–20 years).

Adolescents are susceptible to various disorders that need special care. There can be numerous issues including growth disorders, puberty and pubertal disorders, voice disorders, eating and obesity disorders, thyroid and other medical and mental disorders. Every adolescent requires immunization against certain diseases and annual health checkup.

In recent times with breakdown of joint family system, inadequate parental guidance, unmonitored media exposure, increased competitiveness, materialism, consumerism and individualism, the adolescents and their parents are exposed to new risks and stress in the form of drug addiction, life style disorders, sexual promiscuity and internet addiction.

“Adolescence is characterized by various stages from a transitional stage, peak intelligence and high stamina, rebellious attitude, seeking freedom and liberty, attention seeking behavior, emotional instability and lack of self-control. It is also an age for experimentation, questioning, emotional highs and lows, impulsivity and a tendency towards risk taking behaviors. It becomes difficult for parents to understand the behavior of the kid and if not managed properly things can go out of hand and have adverse effects.

Usually, parents and kids shy away and do not take professional medical help which is extremely important. An exclusive clinic will encourage all the troubled parents facing issues due to hormonal changes related to adolescence,” said Dr Jayashree K, adolescent pediatrician, associate professor - department of pediatrics, KMC Hospitals, Mangaluru. Dr Jayashree has done a specialized post graduate diploma course on adolescent pediatrics from Kerala University, Trivandrum.

"In tune with our commitment to cater the best medical services, we are happy to launch 'Happy Teen' clinic exclusively for adolescents. There is need for greater awareness on this subject as people tend to ignore changes during adolescence. It should be noted that the behavioral changes during this period are natural and are not a medical disorder. It is a natural growth phenomenon which requires professional help. At Happy Teen Clinic, we offer a combination of solutions to cater to various needs. We have a team of competent and experienced doctors and specialists who can deal with all the aspects related to adolescence. This is a platform where parents and their adolescent’s thought processes can be integrated to give them a better quality of life and resolve their dilemmas,” said Dr Anand Venugopal, medical superintendent, KMC Hospital.
