Afghanistan army reclaims district from Taliban

Kabul, Oct 24 (IANS): The Afghan army on Saturday recaptured Ghormach district, bordering Turkmenistan, from Taliban militants, said a defence ministry spokesman.

"Cleanup operation was going on to clear the militants from the district and the surrounding areas," Xinhua news agency quoted General Dawlat Waziri as saying in a tweet.

The militants were driven out of the district centre shortly after the operation began in the early hours of Saturday.

Five Taliban militants were killed and four injured since the troops engaged with the militants, according to Waziri.

On October 18, the Taliban militants overran Ghormach district in Faryab province with Maimana as its capital, 425 km from Afghan capital Kabul.
