Mangaluru: Woman from Taccode dies of cardiac arrest during flight

Mangaluru, Oct 26: A woman from Taccode near Moodbidri passed away due to cardiac arrest during a flight from London to Hong Kong on Sunday October 25.

Rita Rodrigues (40), a native of Taccode, was travelling by flight from London to Hong Kong, when she suffered a severe cardiac arrest just before landing at Hong Kong airport.

She breathed her last before medical help could reach her.

Rita leaves behind husband, two daughters, and a son. She hailed from Paladka, and had married Wilfred Pinto from Surlayi, Taccode. Wilfred is a farmer. She was working at Hong Kong for the last several years.

During the last week, she had accompanied the family for which she worked, to London. The tragedy struck during the fag end of her return journey.

    This condition is very prevalent also in the elderly and sometimes diabetics, not just on flights, but also on long road or train trips. I have known a number of elderly people who have passed on such trips. See your doctor before traveling. The usual recommended dose of aspirin is 81 mg

    Dear Marwa the Condition you are talking is called Deep vein Thrombosis .Here the blood within Leg veins ( Not Nerves) gets clotted leading to throwing off an embolus into Heart vessels supplying the lungs which when blocked will lead to what is called fatal Pumlonary embolus which can lead to cardiac arrest and death
    We dont know may be she already having a coronary heart diseases and got an heart attack
    Solution to prevent Vein thrombosis is keep flexing your legs .About 1/3 rd of the blood is stored in the calf muscles which need to be pumped regularly.Drink frequent fluids .
    Any way My condolence message to the diseased soul from near Moodbidri .May God giver her peace and let relatives get courage to withstand the sorrow

    Dear Mr.marwa, mangalore/dubai.Dev, Mangalore, itz TRUE that many people get heart attack or cardiac arrest due to lack of blood supply which is caused by sitting at one place like hours together or lack fresh ventilation and mainly due to no chance to move the body to circulate the blood.. that is the reason people take Aspirin tablet(After DOCTOR"S Advise) just before taking the long trip which thins the blood and giving way to pump easily throughout the body.

    Rightly said sir, but one other alternative to aspirin which is bad for those with ulcers or those who might bleed or are susceptible to haemorrhage in brain are best adviced against the use, but can use Omega3 daily to avoid the side effects as well as have healthy ratio of cholesterol & can lead a healthy life without fear of cardiac or circulation problems ageing brings.

    @Dev Mangalore,best is when travelling Long hours, in flight,first use compress stockings which are available in Pharmacy or some medical stores. They are up to hips.and are a very good help when someone is lightly has tendency heart attach,to diabetics.I use it personally.They are bit unconfortable first but fulfill their usage.sametime,not sit all the time but move now and then walk .some exercises like bending ,Hands moveing make blood circulate.and so can avoid such Problems.One who has heart Problems take with doctors permission either Aspirin or a Heparin injection which acts for 12-24hours.It is left to each one.specially when one feels tired,or sleepy,time to get up and move.Then you feel fresh,means Oxygen to your orgens is supplying.blood flows.we are responsible for our own safety.but sometimes things go out of our Hands with all precautions then only god hsould help us.Sad this Lady had to die n the way.May her Soul rest in peace.heartfelt condolences to the Family.

    Good advice by Rita,One more thing to remember by those who use aspirin-
    Tell your doctors about its use if surgery is needed, as bleeding won't stop & can cause death if not discontinued a few days before surgery.
    Let us think a scenario if the patient gets hurt or needs emergency surgery & he is not conscious if not aware about it doctors operate successfully but result might be.....?

    more than 4 hrs continuous journey is risk of blood clots, not only in the flight but in other transport too...that's why we have to take breaks in between to stretch our body....bear in mind...

    Most sudden deaths on long haul flights are mostly caused by 'Deep Vein Thrombosis' caused due to dehydration and cramped sitting conditions!!

    I have noticed several times during flight in different airlines. it is chilly!!!! very cold.some not all know very well that air-conditioners are very dangerous. they dont allow to circulate blood freely in the nerves. flight authorities should monitor this AC regulators and secondly now a days in every flights economy class the seats are congested we cannot open our legs and sit comfortably and the airline crew not allowing to do the seats push back.to make money they increased the seats forgetting about the comfort and convenience of a passenger. you only imagine how can a person travel 8 hours in such flights and no wonder if anyone gets cardiac arrest!!! if u disagree with me i dont care!!!

    There is no air conditioners in aeroplanes, but compressed chilled air is circulated in a controlled setting, which is filled into them when they are in an air port.
    Remaining points are right as far as congested seat arrangement in economy class, which is the main culprit which helps form blood clots which travel to their hearts & block the blood supply to it causing its failure.

    On long flights people need to walk to help blood move from their feet up, otherwise blood clots can form causing heart attacks in most cases after they go home, but in this case it happened in flight itself.
    Drink adequate water, move often to toilets to help blood move up the feet don't take alcoholic drinks or smoke in flight are some methods to prevent cardiac arrest.
