South Korean woman indicted for allegedly raping husband

Seoul, Oct 27 (IANS): A 40-year-old South Korean woman has been indicted on charges of allegedly raping her husband, prosecutors said on Tuesday.

It marks the first time that a wife has been charged with marital rape in South Korea after the Supreme Court recognised spousal rape as a crime in May 2013, Yonhap News Agency reported.

The Seoul Central Prosecutors' Office investigating the case alleged that the woman locked her husband, inside their house for 29 hours and forced him to have sex with her.

Shim allegedly committed the crime with the aim of obtaining favourable evidence to use for divorce procedures, the prosecutors said.

In many countries, such as the US, Britain, Germany and France, marital rape constitutes a crime.

According to UN figures, marital rape is a prosecutable offence in over 104 countries.
