Eminent Indian scientist P.M. Bhargava on Thursday said he will return his Padma Bhushan award in protest against the "growing intolerance in the country".

Bhargava, who was the founder-director of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), said religious beliefs are personal choices and should not interfere in politics.

"The fear as we see in democracy today... the spread of Hindutva... I believe that (religion) really is a personal matter. It should stay as a personal matter. It should not make incursions into politics as it is doing now," he told IANS.

The 87-year-old said he also finds statements by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat that women should restrict themselves to doing household chores, as "detestable".

Bhargava said he will meet the home secretary and give back the award. He also encouraged the youth brigade in the scientific community to come forward and protest.

Incidentally, the veteran researcher is one of the scientists who started the online petition on Tuesday, signed by atleast 100 senior scientists, addressed to President Pranab Mukhrejee against growing intolerance.

    Scientist returning award? For what?
    He wants to invent communal things?
    It was expected from Psuedo Seculars, will be good for the Country if all the Psuedo Seculars return & resign.
    Psuedo Seculars are not getting free ration & perks since May 2014, so they want to protest in this way to hide their real anger.
    I want all Sikulars yaane Seculars alias Psuedo Seculars to resign from Parliament, Assemblies & any other occupied posts. There is no shortage in India, young talent is waiting for the opportunities. So please return awards, government should appeal to return benefits which they have got without any effort. Government should motivate them till they return everything.

    Good to know that these film makers, scientists and scholars are returning their awards and recognition. There is a fear in them that such awards may be re-scrutinized by the present government and will be taken back from them. Like 2g, 3g and coal scam and adarsh, this should have been a bigger scam in those days, which these beneficiaries surely aware of. at this age, they are afraid of the legal actions and the humiliation and they are conveniently returning it.
    I was not very particular about the religion and the technicalities of it, but now, with the present scenario, i feel that this intellectuals are all a sham and are wanting a kind of publicity and sponsorship by the government. When they dont get it they try to humiliate the government. I, as an Indian, will not allow any intellectual to insult my Prime minister and the government. My reply to these hypocrites is "GO TO HELL- I DON'T CARE"

    The backward march of the awards from the great award winners in many fields in India is showing to India and to the world, that the downward march of India is alarming.

    2014 Election we voted for BJP by thinking that Modi Sir will do something for nation.

    I wish our PM will take this award returning issues seriously because India is a Country where Poets,Writers,Artists,Scientists are jewels. Please dont ignore them by getting some vote of confidence from some fringe groups.

    This Government is so deaf & mute that they don't hear anything that questions them. They only hear the praise by their bakhts.     I can see some people saying why they have not returned during UPA rule? Why not in 90's or 80's.

    I will answer for this:

    It is true that during congress,Janata parivar ruling also massacres,riots were happened.
    But no It was not sponsored by the Central Ministers or governments.

    That time ministers used to condemn it publicly and sometimes they use to resign by taking moral responsibility. They use to atelast publicly apologise it.

    But now????

    No merit for High positions, Dictatorship in ministery. Ministers are not bothered.

    Instead of Beef, I changed to eggs Rs. 600
    To save onions changed from sorpotel to chicken Rs 200
    Cooking oil 4 L to 2 L saving Rs 400
    Keeping away from all other costly cereals and eating potatoes Rs.400
    Maharashtra govt has again increased liquor prices. I get it by my friend from Goa. For 4 Signature bottles, saving Rs. 2000
    Total saving Rs. 4000
    Now I have become lean and healthy. Thank you BJP.
