Mangaluru, Oct 30: Mangaluru International Airport will get a new control tower, a parallel taxi way and a primary radar very soon.
This was revealed by airport director J T Radhakrishna in a press meet at Mangaluru International Airport here on Thursday October 29.
Radhakrishna said that the installation of the new radar will help in safe take-off and landing of airplanes even during bad weather. The airport has already procured the equipment and the work to install it will commence in the New Year in a separate building.
At present there are six parking bases at the airport. Work to construct three more will be completed by June next year. Two additional parallel taxiways will be constructed by March next year which will help in operation of more flights. The work on the exit road too will be completed by January.
Radhakrishna also said that the air traffic has increased by 20 per cent in the last six months with a total of 13 lac passengers travelling during this period. The airport has started operating a new daily Jet Airways flight to New Delhi at 7.30 am from October 25. Currently, 23 average airplanes operate from and to Mangaluru with 50 trips. The passenger traffic is expected to cross 15 lac this year.
The extension of a runway will be done subject to the procurement of land. The state government help has been sought in this regard. A request has also been made to the government to develop the road from the Konkan railway bridge till Maravoor.
World Quality Commitment (WQC) Award
Mangaluru International Airport was awarded the World Quality Commitment (WQC) award at Paris, France and Radhakrishna received the award on October 25.The award was presented by the Business Initiative Directions (BID) and the criteria of quality, leadership and excellence have been taken into consideration. The BID has recognised the airport based on the data provided by the Airport Council, and has presented the award based on the Total Quality Management model QC 100 of the airport. During the last year, the customer satisfaction index has improved from 4.35 to 4.82. Also, the airport has been given 4.92 points out of 5 in cleanliness.
