Doctorate degree conferred: Raghunath Achari was selected for a doctoral degree for his work on ‘Agrobacterium mediated transformation’ an genetic analysis of chilli by the Mangalore University  Chilli, an important crop is affected by a virus, ‘leaf curl disease’, which reduces the yield considerably.

Achari working under the guidance of Dr Leo D’Souza introduced a gene to control the disease in the Laboratory of Applied Biology in St Aloysius College. Achari presently works as research scientist in the Monsanto Research Centre.

Applications solicited: All aspirants in the party who would like to contest for the urban local bodies in the district should submit their application before August 10, stated District Congress Committee president Blasius M D’Souza in a press release.

Applications should be addressed to the president, Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee, Mangalore informed the press release.

‘Dental Home’ opens: A ‘Dental Home’ was inaugurated by A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Deralakatte here on Monday, August 6 stated a press release.

‘Dental Home’ is a clinic specially to treat children’s dental problems at the premises of the hospital. It is an adaptation of ‘dental home’ concept which is prevalent in the United States. It will provide comprehensive screening and treatment to children from infancy.

The dental home has been developed jointly with K S Hegde charitable hospital and Dakshina Kannada chapter of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics.

Quiz competition: Mangalore research centre of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) will organize a quiz competition for high school students on August 15, as part of the golden jubilee of the CMFRI stated a press release.
