Modi to Congress: Don't teach us tolerance on '84 riots anniversary

Patna, Nov 2 (Agencies) : Launching a blistering attack on Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the Sonia Gandhi-led party had no right to lecture the BJP and his government over tolerance at a time when the nation is observing 31st anniversary of 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Addressing a public gathering in Purnea ahead of the fifth and final phase of Bihar Assembly election, Modi said," Do you remember what happened on November 2, 1984 in Delhi? Sikhs were killed. Congress leaders were blamed for it and how ironic is it that the same party is lecturing us on tolerance."

"Aaj bhi un Sikh parivaron ke aansoo nhi ponchhe gye hain (Sikh families are awaiting justice even now)," Modi said in his last push before campaigning for the final phase ends on Tuesday.

This is for the first time that Modi has targeted the Congress, which is a part of the grand alliance comprising of Lalu Yadav's RJD and JD(U), over 1984 riots while canvassing for Bihar polls. Political analysts believe that Modi's outburst against Congress has to do with the Opposition's continuous attack on the BJP over the issue of 'tolerance'. While Modi has been talking about development being his only agenda, the Opposition has left no stones unturned to targeted him over incidents like Dadri and beef controversy.

Modi's remark comes ahead of Congress president scheduled meeting with President Pranab Mukherjee where she is likely to raise the issue of rising intolerance in the country.

According to Congress insiders, Sonia along with son and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi and senior party leaders will meet Pranab Mukherjee in the evening to discuss the "current political situation".

Modiji you get up only when Congress speaks. That means eventhough you learn something or not, you get angry. Please live in the present and start fulfilling your duties by doing what is most important to the people who have voted you. Satisfy their needs. Then you can say, you did it and no one taught you.

Riots are despicable acts of violence and against all humanities.

Delhi was leaderless when Indira Gandhi was murdered and the riots happened. Godhra post burning of train riots did happened. But, I guess both are natural reactions.

What is different in Sikh riots and Gujarat riots is the fury of riots in Gujarat peaked only after CM Modi started taking the procession of murdered victims who were kar sevaks, that included women and children.

Such act is unexpected of any leader. This is where Modi differs from any political leaders and why he becomes part of riots. So, of all Modi definately does not have any moral high ground. Further, having a rent riot accused in UP as union minister, makes that credibility to that assertion.
