Mangaluru: Truck takes a 'toll' on gate at Suratkal, traffic affected

Mangaluru, Nov 6: A heavy truck hit the roof of the Suratkal toll gate, bringing down a part of it and affecting the traffic on the Udupi-Mangaluru highway in the wee hours of Friday, November 6.

As per the information, the truck carrying beedi leaves (tendu) from Udupi to Mangaluru hit the gate at around 3.30 am. A part of roof toll gate roof was completely damaged.

The accident affected the traffic for a long time, as vehicles could move only in a single line.

Traffic police arrived at the spot and managed to control the situation. The airport bound travellers were delayed due to the traffic jam, eye witnesses said.

MLA Mohiuddin Bava visited the spot and took stock of the situation. Speaking to reporters, he said, "A single truck passing through the toll gate has caused so much damage. It shows the poor quality of the work. This is not the right spot to have toll gate."

    steps towards smart city. Respected Traffic Police and the corporation you can make the situation better if you work genuinely. Some times i doubt whether it is road or parking area in mangaluru City.

    How come RTO personnel did not observe the monster's huge projection of load bulging on all four sides and stop and take action against the driver!! Action should also be initiated against the co. who permitted such oversized loads to be transported!!

    The canopy constructed looks like a makeshift shed the way it gave way when the lorry brushed against it!!

    Either the truck was not following the legal height or the toll roof was not setup at the legal height. Another thing, this incident shows the construction quality. Even a strong storm could have done such damage looking at the strength of the pillars. I think the contractor was not ready to spend lot of money on this. Perhaps he was afraid of possible protests in future for the closure of the toll gate. Then why would he spend in constructing a permanent structure. Politics needs to be blamed here.

    what ever it is, it happened for good. The hell view of that toll while driving view NITK was reminding the cruel politics, corruption in the system. Now god has done this to clean up the area. Please displose these materials somewhere else, clean up this area and also with out nay toll to be paid.

    Local Panjurli & Naga have supported the public protest. We the innocent public paying tax while buying the vehicle, during registration, for repairing, service, spare parts, Petrol, Diesels, oil, Lubricants, for travel Agents, Public Transport etc. etc..In addition to this why should we pay for toll gate illegally? Is this toll collection is legal? Is our constitution is binding on this illegal collection? Govt has to stop toll collection all over India immediately.

    Just like Mangaluru Udupi Highway, the toll gate also looks like it was built by some scamster and not a civil Engineer. Who in his right mind would build a toll gate tall enough to be knocked by a lorry ? And even if the top part of the lorry hit it, how did the entire structure collapse ? It is high time all the people involved in this highway project are blacklisted.

    Toll may be collected for un-interrupted traffic flow. But in this highway no service road, for every half a kilometer traffic barricade is placed. And the highway itself is dangerous for drive, on top of that preparations being made to collect toll

    Toll gates in Hejamadi Mulki and KREC is meaningless....why Udupi dist people or DK dist people need to pay any Tax to use this road??? How many lacks pocketed by DK as well as Udupi politicians or any so called social organizations??..Whole Udupi/DK dist people to be OBJECTED this move...there should not be any toll tax to KA19 and KA20, KA21 vehicles to cross....

    Our DK, Udupi district peoples are well educated and very soft.Even if government construct toll every one KM, they will pay toll silently and drive on bad roads. God help us.

    You are absolutely right..bcoz of DK/Udupi people are soft and educated this road(NH17 now NH66) construction took almost six years still not completed..service road God know ...Do you noticed any major news papers or any TV print media highlighted the delay??? or any Big politicians from region protested for years together delay..big No,,,then think of under table passings...We DKites are fools...not educated now life long pay Toll to cross our own TULUNADU...DISGUSTED....     First of all, TOLL GATES are not for Permanent purpose in India so that they can Build a Solid Structure, Only thing either Both side of toll gate they must Provide a Dummy Barrier which hit First, and Most Important how the truck driver is taking Vehicle without Judging the Height of his Vehicle....

    First thing - Look at the Toll Booth - how Cheap!Looks like half of the amount reserved for toll construction is swallowed by some coyote.

    Second Thing - Make separate roof less lane for large/heavy vehicles.

    Looking at this I don't think Mangalore will become a SMART CITY, Because they couldn't even figure out a small issue like this, even after knowing. Then how they will manage to restructure Mangalore into a smart city.

    International standard height for clearances is 5.5 meters. This truck appears to have been loaded higher.

    The design of the toll gate too is very cheap and rudimentary. But there is no accountability as many palms have been greased .
