Myanmar ruling party new chairman defeated in election


Nay Pyi Taw, Nov 9 (IANS): The new chairman of Myanmar's ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), U Htay Oo, has been defeated in the general elections, the party said on Monday.

U Htay Oo lost to U Khin Maung Yi of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) in his bid to retain his seat in the House of Representatives from the Hinthada township constituency in the Ayeyawaddy region, Xinhua reported.

A number of leaders of Myanmar's ruling party and ministers were initially reported to have in Sunday's general election, while the NLD is leading.

The election result is expected to be officially released later on Monday.

The USDP fed 1,122 candidates and NLD fielded 1,123 for the elections.

A total of 6,038 candidates from 91 political parties and 310 independents contested more than 1,000 seats at three levels of parliament in the elections.
