Mangalore: Preparing for the Diamond Independence Day

Mangalore, Aug 11: As the country’s Independence Day is fast approaching on August 15, the city is all geared up for the ‘D’ day, preparing for the official celebrations, which will be held on Nehru Maidan here on Wednesday, amidst tight security. People have been urged by police authorities to co-operate with them in this regard.

Mangaloreans by and large are looking forward to the day, as patriotic fever seems to have caught up with the general public. All around one notices the shops in the city displaying wares designed in varied colors of saffron, white and green to inspire feelings of patriotism in people.

The shops around the central market have come up with new concepts to attract customers. Already shops have started attracting people with their colorful flags and attractive T-shirts on display. The shop-owners look up to this prestigious occasion as a wonderful opportunity to earn some monetary gains by selling flags, caps, badges and T-shirts. Especially children are the most ardent buyers of these items. Moreover one will also notice that garment shops displaying saris made in designs similar to the national flag in order to attract female buyers.

One must remember that Independence Day this year is not just another ordinary day. Our country is celebrating its diamond jubilee year of independence, this year. Hence, being Indians, this is the time to feel proud about ourselves and our country.

To help ordinary citizens double the joy of our independence, the shop keepers here are renewing their stocks of flags, T-shirts and other articles relating to our independence. The time has come to rush the shops and to do some business in the name of independence…

However, considering the volatile situation in the country, precautions as stated above have also been undertaken by the state police to ensure that the situation is not marred by any untoward incident so that the general public can enjoy the event in a peaceful atmosphere. People will have to enter the venue through the metal frame detector. People have been requested not to touch any unidentified or suspicious objects they might come across.
 
A police dog squad and a bomb detection squad will be at the venue for extra protection. Additional civil police constables, personnel from the District Armed Reserve, Karnataka State Reserve Police and Rapid Action Force too will be deployed for security arrangements on Tuesday. Similar security arrangements will be in place across the district.

    As our nation makes it to 60th ID, a diamond year, we have much celebrate about, about our beloved land, its people and its one of a kind unique culture and its peoples yearning for living together is harmony despite minor differences here and there.

    No nation can progress as our nation has done. I am not talking about going to the moon or having reached the status of so called First world. Many still call our nation a third world country, Some call it developing and others called underdeveloped. Yet many still call it as the most onderful nation to live. While defeerences of opinion persist, and should, I am under the opinion that our nation is the supreme one. It has everything to give. Yes some of our people are in poverty, yet they are happier than the people in a richer country.

    What are our contributions to the world I can safely and vociferously say, its the doctrine of Non-violence, a doctrine, practiced and deliverd by our Father of nation Mahatma Gandhi. Today despite warfares around the world, wars fought on mere selfish and greedy grounds by the so called developed and first world nations, India is still averting conflicts despite horrrendous violence against it by terrorism.

    Our people are the resource to the world whether be in skilled or unskilled labour. More than 25% of our population is under 30 and graduates surpass any other nation on earth. As a young nation we have much more work to do specially bringing up the downtrodden. We must become a nation of resouce concious unlike the so called developed world. we must progress but that progress must be resource nature, agriculture and in living a life that closely relates to our mother earth. That means we have to protect our land, its waters and its air from the onslought of globalisation and the so called development which only is thriving out of greed.

    Let us create our own standard rather than comparing any other nation. Let us be proud what we are, what we speak and what we eat and how we live. Its our nation and its our land and we are proud to be Indians. Long live India, Jai Hind.
