Mumbai: Dr Veerendra Heggade and Shilpa Shetty Receive Rajiv Gandhi Awards

Mumbai, Aug 13: Two Tuluva-Kannadigas, Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala's Dharmadhikari Rajarshi Dr D Veerendra Heggade and Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty are among the recipients of the Rajiv Gandhi Award-2007. The awards were presented at a glittering ceremony held in the NCPA auditorium at Nariman Point here.

The prestigious award is presented by the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation to personalities from different fields for their contribution and achievements.

Dr Heggade was chosen for his exemplary contribution to various sectors of the society, most importantly to education and rural development, whereas Shilpa Shetty was selected for her achievements in the field of films. Other awardees included Bollywood actor Salman Khan, former cricket captain Kapil Dev, astronaut Sunita Williams and others.

Foundation president and MP Gurudas Kamat and honourary secretary Charan Singh Safra were present on the occasion.

Maharashtra governor Vilasrao Deshmukh, former CM and union minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, Murli Deora, state minister Suresh Shetty, AICC secretary and former MP Margaret Alva were also among those present.

    Congrats to Mr. Heggade and Ms Shetty. Well even Salman Khan gets the award !! is it recognition for his contributions like killing 1 person after drunk driving and killing animals in national park.

    It is really refreshing to note that a great personality, Dr Veerendra Heggade, has been recognised for his untiring and selfless service and commitment to the community and his vision in promoting educational institutions to meet the ever growing global needs. A great moment of pride indeed!!
