Colonel dies in operation to flush out militants

Srinagar, Nov 17 (PTI): An Army Colonel of the elite Para Commando force was today killed and a policeman injured after coming under fire from militants in a forest area of Kashmir where the officer was leading a search party to flush out the hiding ultras.

39-year-old Colonel Santosh Mahadik, Commanding Officer of 41 Rashtriya Rifles, was critically injured during the operation in the Haji Naka forest area of Kupwara near the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, officials said.

He was immediately evacuated to a hospital but he succumbed to injuries, the officials said.

A police constable was also injured in the firing and was undergoing treatment.

Santosh, who hailed from Maharashtra and was commissioned in the Army in 1998, was originally from the Special Forces. He had received Sena Medal for exhibiting gallantry and leadership in counter terrorist operations, Defence spokesman said.

The operation to track down the militants was continuing when last reports were received, the officials said.

The party of army and police came under fire when it was conducting searches as part of an operation started on November 13 to flush out terrorists hiding in the forest area on the basis of a specific information.

An Army jawan was injured on the first day of the operation.

After the initial contact on November 13, the militants fled deep into the forests and the security forces continued the chase them, leading to fresh contact today, the officials said.

Col Santosh leaves behind wife and two children, aged 11 and five years, the defence spokesman said, adding the Army is committed to providing all support to the family in this hour of grief.

The spokesman said the Colonel was a true soldier and had conducted many successful counter-terrorist operations.

General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command Lt Gen DS Hooda has expressed deep condolences on the loss of this brave Commanding Officer.

"We owe a deep debt of gratitude to officers like Santosh who lead from the front and are willing to pay the ultimate price in the fight against terrorism," Lt Gen Hooda said

There is no bigger patriot than a soldier fallen in action for their motherland.

Modi promised everything but delivered nothing. To ensure no further bloodshed of brave, the strategy must be 1) Use best of technology and robotic resources to check, counter and eliminate infiltration.
Problem: This is available, but Govt., has no guts to use

    2) Ensure peace and tranquility within the populace.
Problem: RSS helps terrorists with enough fodder for recruitment, which is again a failure.

    3) Economic development and justice to ensure youth do not stray to anti-national and anti-social organization. Deal firmly with such organizations.

Problem: PDP, which is pro-separatist party is in alliance with BJP. Separatist leaders are getting higher and bigger attention for their anti-india rants. Even channels like TOI giving too much air-time, trying to tell people are zero's but giving them enough propaganda time.

It is our duty to demand as citizens both from Govt. and channels and at the same time, make sure youths within society are not strayed to extremist thinking.

Modi is neither taking military option nor diplomatic option, he just wants to tour the whole world before his term finishes and not at all bothered about our soldiers dying at the border neither he is worried about the country's internal situation.
