France, Brazil to cooperate over Rio 2016 games security

Rio De Janeiro, Nov 23 (IANS): France will share intelligence with Brazil in a bid to foil possible terrorist attacks at next year's Olympic Games, officials from both nations have said.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said his counterpart Laurent Fabius had offered his country's support during security talks in Brasilia over the weekend, Xinhua news agency reported.

"Minister Fabius offered a possible exchange of information and experiences, which for the Brazilian government is very welcome," Vieira said at a press conference.

The announcement came nine days after a series of shootings and explosions killed more than 100 people in Paris, which will host the UN's COP21 climate change conference from November 30 to December 11.

While Brazil has historically not had enemies, Fabius last week called on a global strategy to fight terrorism, saying the attacks could have occurred anywhere.

The Rio 2016 Games, to be held from August 5 to 21, will be the first Olympics in South America.
