Dubai, Nov 27: Burjeel Hospital for Advanced Surgery (BHAS), has become the first speciality hospital in the world to achieve the Excellence in Medical Tourism certificate after achieving international accreditation from German based body, Temos.
Temos aims to establish a world-wide network of quality hospitals and clinics for the assistance of overseas travellers seeking healthcare internationlly.
This is an important milestone for the hospital, which was also recently awarded ‘Specialty Hospital of the Year’ at the 10th World Health Tourism Congress, and ‘Arab Health – Excellence in Surgery Services 2015’ at the 8th Arab Health Innovation and Achievement Awards earlier this year.
Commenting on the Temos accreditation, Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, managing director, VPS Healthcare, said, “This is an important milestone endorsing BHAS’ status as a quality healthcare facility that caters to both regional and international medical patients. Temos’ certification is given to hospitals that have a national or international quality management system (QMS) focusing on medical tourists. Healthcare facilities have to additionally fulfill the strict Temos quality criteria governing the treatment of international patients. The standards measured include pre-travel arrangements, post-treatment, post-discharge and follow up services offered by the hospital to medical tourists.

“BHAS’ growing status as a top medical facility for advanced orthopedic treatment is evident in the fact that the hospital has seen a 61 per cent rise in the inflow of patients from outside the country. The Emirate attracted 260,000 medical tourists in the first half of 2015. BHAS’ efforts at consistently improving the quality of healthcare services have also been recognized by the Joint Commission International, USA (JCI) which is acknowledged as one of the highest international standards of safety and care that can be achieved by a hospital. JCI standards include key elements like patient rights, informed consent, pain consent and additional key standards.
