Mangaluru, Nov 29: Udupi diocese bagged the overall championship in the inter - diocese Wilfy Memorial Singing Contest held at Infant Mary School grounds, Jeppu here on Sunday November 29.
The grand finale saw 28 contestants from Mangaluru and Udupi dioceses rendering hits of the legend Konkan Kogull the late Wilfy Rebimbus. The contest was held in six categories. The semi-finals were held separately in Udupi and Mangaluru dioceses last month.
Mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation Jacintha Alfred, convenor of The Expressions Group Kishoo Barkur, wife of the late Wilfy Rebimbus, Meena Rebimbus, son Vishwas Rebimbus, his spouse Charleen Rebimbus, prish priest of Jeppu church Fr Nelson Almeida, headmistress of the Infant Mary School Sr Sylvia distributed the prizes to the winners.
Prior to the prize distribution ceremony, one of the judges Fr Valerian Mendonca, gave his feedback on the contest and hailed the contributions of Wilfy Rebimbus to Konkani.
"I feel that through the participants of the competetion, the organisers and the ones present, Wilfy Rebimbus has come alive. His songs and compositions will always keep humming in our hearts and minds; such is the effect of Wilfy's compositions. I thank Wilfy's family for this event and for their contribution towards the society."
Speaking about the performances of the participants he said, "All the singers should keep in mind that the judgement given was based only on tonight's performance. In the future, keep in mind that singing should be alive. Give fidelity to the orginal and involve yourself in singing. I thank all the participants for their performances. You have provided us a wonderful evening indeed."
Prior to the musical event, the organisers offered a floral tribute to the late Wilfy's portrait and writer Kishoo Barkur paid a homage.
Parish priest of Jeppu church Fr Nelson D'Almeida welcomed the gathering while secretary of Jeppu parish council Laveena Dias rendered the vote of thanks. Cyril G Sequeira, popularly known as C G S Taccode was the master of ceremony for the event who entertained the audience with jokes.
The event was judged by Fr Valerian Mendonca, Wilson Oliver and Alwyn Noronha, Bajpe.
