Mangaluru: Man 'wins' lottery, ends up losing money

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 4: Prakash R Shetty from Kallamundkoor village near Kinnigoly lost about Rs 4.75 lac, after falling to the lure of claiming Rs 25 lac he supposedly won in a lottery scheme.

A few months back, Shetty received a call from a person who introduced himself as Sandeep Patil. The caller informed Shetty that the latter had won a lottery amounting to Rs 25 lac, adding that some taxes were to be paid before this sum could be claimed. Thereafter, it is learnt, Shetty kept remitting money as demanded to seven different account numbers mentioned by the caller through a nationalized bank at Kinnigoli.

It finally dawned upon Shetty, who also remitted some money on December 2, that he would have become the victim of a fraud. He totaled up the amount so far remitted, and found that Rs 4.75 lac had been siphoned off from his account. Thereafter, he approached Mulky police station and filed a complaint.

He also found through the bank that the accounts of the stranger to whom money was transferred on different occasions were maintained in Jharkhand. He provided to the police account numbers, telephone numbers of the caller, fact that amount were being withdrawn immediately after they were deposited into account, and some other details. It is gathered that in his complaint, Shetty has expressed suspicion about the role of some labourers working in Kallamundkoor area in this fraud.

Even after Shetty lodged police complaint, he received two calls from Sandeep Patil to transfer money, it is gathered.

I like to share the following:

There is another scam. A call comes to your home land line and he ensures your name correctly (BSNL phone owners name available if you google in the net).

Then he/she would say, an Insurance policy in your name is pending for payment, you want the money or shall I cancel it? I replied yes, indeed I need the money. As I know we have no insurance policy at all, I sensed it is fishy. I continued conversation and she said, send Rs. 22,000 thru courier and I will release the HDFC Insurance fund, Rs. 149,000. I said ok. But I prolonged the contacts to derive maximum information and she kept calling daily. She asked if I have any cell number, I said, I am an illiterate and do not know how to operate the cell.

She kept on calling daily if the money was sent or not and sometime my wife picks up phone and she would say, I think money is sent and, we ignore call, seeing their numbers.

They have six different mobile numbers, It is a big syndicate. I have noted all their numbers and postal address and Bank account and bank details.

As I am not duped, there is no use of lodging a complaint to police.

It was in last month, and even some day now we get call inquiring if the Rs. 22,000 was sent or not. Our aim is to loose their some money on mobile phone.

She showed that message to me and i told her there is no way one can win without buying a lottery ticket and to ignore such messages / calls. I explained her about some of the scams.May be Shetty should have consulted some genuine person before jumping and depositing the money.

Normal modus operandi is - you get a message that you are the luckiest one in a random draw of mobile numbers. Couple of years ago I too received such a message and that was from Pakistan, to which I replied 'Idiotic territory ceases at your border, don't look beyond that'
