Bengaluru: Carbon monoxide from bathroom gas geyser kills woman, child

Bengaluru, Dec 8: Carbon monoxide generated by gas geyser fitted inside the bathroom of a house here killed a woman and her child. The tragedy occurred at Laxmipura near Kempegowdanagara in the city.

Arpitha (23), residing in Laxmipura first cross in Gavipura, and her child, Amruth (3), lost their lives in this accident. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon. Policemen said that the doctors have arrived at the conclusion that carbon monoxide had caused their deaths.

Arpitha had married Nagarjun from Hiriyoor in Chitradurga district four years back. Nagarjuna is a Purohit by profession. The couple had shifted their residence to this house about three weeks ago. Nagarjuna's parents, Sooryanarayana and Annapoornamma, also reside in this house.

It is gathered that when Arpitha was taking bath, Amruth knocked at the door, saying that he urgently needed to relieve himself. Arpitha let him in. Arpitha's in-laws were at home, and Nagarjuna was out on work. As her daughter-in-law did not come out for long, Annapoornamma knocked at the bathroom door. Even after incessant knocking there was no response. Then the couple broke open the door to find bodies of Arpitha and Amruth scattered on the floor inside. Both were then taken to hospital, but were reported brought dead, it is gathered.

Amruth's third birthday was celebrated on November 24. It is learnt that wherever gas geysers are installed, proper ventilation is compulsory, as carbon monoxide, which can bring death within seconds, gets generated on account of heat. Policemen who noted that this bathroom lacked proper ventilation, added that they will also look into the possibility of faulty installation of geyser which was brought from the old home of the couple here three weeks ago.

    Sad to hear this incident.The gas heater exhaust emissions are mainly carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, therefore the ventilation system requirement is very much a must.
    Carbon monoxide is also called a silent killer, breathing it more than the permissible limits will automatically cut down the oxygen supply to brain as blood has more affinity to carbon monoxide than oxygen forming carboxyhemaglobin, this cuts down the functions of brain and can kill the person without his or her knowledge.
    People who use gas water heaters ether should keep it outside the bathroom or ensure there is absolute ventilation provided.
