Mangaluru: 10 held in various cases, accused in Deralakatte incident sent to Ballari

Mangaluru, Dec 8: The police have arrested 10 persons in connection with various cases, including one in the Deralakatte incident of forced sex and extortion of a medical student.

Addressing a press meet at his office here on Tuesday December 8, police commissioner S Murugan said that the police on November 21 arrested Safwan, hailing from Mulky, in connection to the forced sex and extortion of medical students at Deralakatte in 2013.

Safwan has been booked under Goonda Act and sent to Ballari jail, the police commissioner said, adding that Safwan is an accused in 20 other cases of robbery, attempts to murder, assault on police and so on.

The police had already arrested a gang of eight in the case, and were looking for Safwan for long.

In another case, the Pandeshwar police arrested five persons in connection with a series of thefts at different places.

The arrested are Haris alias Chandru (24), Mohammed Shabeer (24), Altaf (24), Umar Farooq (20), Mohammed Rafiq (29), all from Kasba Bengre.

The police commissioner said that the five are involved in 13 cases of thefts in various police stations in and around Mangaluru.

The police recovered 13 mobile phones, 6 two-wheelers and 12 grams gold, altogether worth Rs 5 lac from the accused.

Among the arrested, Haris is involved in nine other cases and took to crime world even before he turned 18, Murugan said.

The police also arrested another gang of thieves involved in various cases in Suratkal police limits.

The arrested are Afreed (19), Shakeef Hussain (19), Naufal Hakeeb (19) and Mohammed Rashid (19), all from Bajpe. On November 19, they had stolen Rs 1,35,000 from a house at Kana in which a family was staying on rent. Four mobile phones and watches were recovered from the accused, the commissoner said.

The same had also looted Rs 56,000 in cash and seven mobile phones on November 24, and have also been involved in extortion cases in Suratkal limits. In Bajpe limits, they were involved in a bank robbery and theft of items worth Rs 2 lac.

The police commissioner praised the cops who were involved in the arrest operations and said that they would be rewarded.
