Proposal to extend runway by 2000 feet at Mangaluru airport

Daijiworld Media Network- Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Dec 16: A new proposal to increase the existing runaway by another 2000 feet has been put forward by the Dakshina Kannada district administration to the state government. The proposal, if implemented, is believed to be very crucial for the overall development of Mangaluru city in particular and coastal districts in general.

A meeting was held recently in which district in- charge minister Ramanath Rai, minister Abhayachandra Jain, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLC Ivan D’Souza, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim and airport director J T Radhakrishna participated and discussed the matter related to the runway extension. It was decided to send the proposal to the state government and to request for help in the land acquisition.

Before this, the state chief secretary had visited Mangaluru airport and responded positively to the draft proposal when he was briefed about the need of the extension. Rs 300 crore is required to extend the runway by 2000 feet, it is estimated. Presently the airport has a runway of 8000 feet.

The land covering Kolambe and Adyapadi villages has been identified which lies adjacent to the present runway. A survey of the land has been done and a report on the same has been submitted to the government.

I would like to draw the attention of the Mangalore Airport Director & the DC Mr. A.B.Ibrahim :

There is a big drainage manhole / chamber which has been overflowing since a month below the driveway from the arrival lounge or the start of the new exit road of the airport which is under construction. I'm amazed that the Airport Director or the Airport staff has ignored this health hazard. Even a blind man may be able to see this overflowing manhole / chamber.

Another point I wish to ask : (a) Who has given special permission only for cabs to park on the driveway and near the arrival lounge ? Has the Central Govt. given such a permission.(b) Who has given special permission for top Bank officials coming in "Govt of India" cars, Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University , NMPT Chairman, top Police officials to park their vehicles near the arrival lounge ? Aren't their salaries paid by us citizens. How do they become VVIP's ? Has the CISF at the Airport been sleeping ?This tamasha has to stop.

I wish to write to the Civil Aviation Minister and the Union Home Minister regarding this special permission granted by the Mangalore Airport Director to our State bureaucrats and the Airport taxi mafia.

I totally agree with Mr.Pai. This is utter nonsense. Can the Airport Director show this special permission accorded by the Central Govt and can he make this public ? All these bureaucrats salaries are paid by us taxpayers. How are their cars allowed to park at the arrival lounge while the taxpayer has to walk down to the car park. Isn't this utter discrimination by the CISF and the Airport Director ? Have these guys fallen on us from heaven ? I have been watching this blatant nonsense since many years.

Airport drainage chamber overflowing : The Airport Director is against " swatch Bharat" and "Pollution control measures". If anyone falls sick due to this free treatment is available at Govt. Wenlock Hospital. This must be the thinking ??

About VVIP culture of our State bureaucrats, they have learnt it from our politicians who have also fallen from space. The Police can park their vehicles wherever they want. There is no traffic law for them and no fine.

Shame on our law makers! In spite of that dastardly Air India Express Flight 812 overshot the runway while landing on 22 May 2010, in which many of our citizens lost their precious lives, we are still getting one assurance from the other by our good for nothing politicians!

Mr Kumar, As per the investigation into the air accident at Mangalore , it was not because of the runway. It was due to pilot error and fatigue. After the accident thousands of landings have taken place without a hitch. So don't blame the runway.

If this new runway is further extended bigger aircrafts could land. That's the idea. The present new runway is about 2.5 kms in length. Another 2000 feet meant an additional half km, making it ultimately about 3 kms long. With this wider body aircrafts of Emirates / Air Asia / Air India etc could land. This may be the idea.

We have often heard of this famous English proverb "There is a solution to every problem"

I am quite confident that this will work out.

Just as the Sahar International Airport was re-developed by the GVK Group (these guys altered it with a totally new face lift) so too let them be given the initiative of conducting an investigation and submit t6heir report and proposal to the IAAI for altering / redeveloping Bajpe airport and bringing it to international standards (NOT to the State Government lest the greedy ministers have their cuts) where all flights can land in without any passenger being in transit.

Mangalore must take a cue out of Bombay's Sahar airport.

Joseph F. Gonsalves, Bannur, Puttur and Jpssey Saldanha Great Idea. I do not see why NRI's will not contribute for their own airport.

All of this is waste of time and money.

Just politicians and their tie-ups are making money, at every intervals.

For landing a A330 or A350 and B777 and B787, the ideal runway and safest runway length is 13500 or approximate 4000 metres. Forget about A380 and B747s even then, cant be at a table top runway, while these type of aircrafts are more than 350 tons.

Politicians and their personal interests make money every now and then.
Problem could have been solved longtime back by shifting airport near Padubidri, along the coastline.

Just see how the situation is at Mumbai CSK airport where there is no room for extension, and at times the aircrafts fly more than 45 minutes, awaiting standby to land.

Just check on the internet the picture of the airport at Gibralter. A330 lands there. It is infact only 2.25 kms in length. The present Mangalore runway is 2.50 kms.The Gibralter airport is ringed by the sea on three sides and on top of a cliff. Have a look.

Gibralter airport is 3rd most dangerous airport in the world, for landing.
Smaller Mishaps have occurred at Gibralter airport in 2002 and 2006 with Monarch airlines.
Only 4 airlines fly to Gilbrater, that is British Airways, EasyJet, Monarch and AirMaroc, with only single aisle aircrafts, that is 320, 737 and 757, operating.
Of course when you have interests similar to politicians, even 320 can become 330 or even 380.

Its an good move to extend the runway length 2000 feet to make convenience for bigger aircarfts land/takeoff safely. I'm not agree with Jossey Saldanha, Mumbai, about 50 Acres land for 300Cr. Its not mot the matter of buy a land, 300Cr is Runways construction estimated cost. Present airport constructed by convenience of safe landing as well as passengers from all places like from north-west side Batkhal, Kundapur, Udupi, Shimogga, Chikmagaluru, Karkala & From south side like Puttur, Coorgh, Kasargood, etc... Also present Airport is near to Mangalore City & also having convenience link to Udupi NH. There is no meaning of passing roumers of shifting Airport & all. Its not a bustand that, today in Bajpe & tomorrow in Konaje. Behind constructing Airport, Geological aspects should meet the requirement as per DGCA. Forget the dream of new or shifting present airport. Lets join hands to the success of extension of Airport.

Good move by the authorities and wish all the very best in the development of Mangalore Airport. Hope this extension of the runway will open the doors for more International flights.

Apart from developing only the airport & the runway, I think the authorities should look into the serious concerns in relates to the arrival & departure area congestions, the taxi mafia, resolving the delay in receiving the baggage and the way customs & security personnel dealing with the passengers’ upon arrival. It is really chaotic at the arrival area where receiving people and private vehicles make things really difficult.

Why spend on the extension of the runway, while we for sure know that it shall not cater to bigger aircrafts ?? Land at Konaje has already been allocated and rather it is suggested to build a new airport with all state-of-the-art facilities, which shall give other airlines to arrive. With this mlore city shall leap towards biggest step in making it a wonderful smart city. Even the landing and take-off approach shall be from single side and in such case operations of flight shall never be disrupted due to fog or heavy rains. With the new airport it would also be a gateway for direct international flight to destinations like europe and USA, if not for south east asia or australia.
