Mangaluru, Dec 16: On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, commemorating India's military victory over Pakistan in 1971 that resulted in the liberation of Bangladesh, the citizens on Wednesday December 16 gathered at the War Memorial in Kadri Park here and paid homage to the martyrs of the war.
The 'Vijay Diwas' commemoration ceremony was organized by the Dakshina Kannada Ex-Servicemen's Association, Mangaluru under the aegis of Shastavu Sri Bhoothanatheshwara Temple Trust and Lions Clubs International, District 317 D.
Speaking to media persons, Col N Sharath Bhandary, coordinator of Dakshina Kannada Ex-Servicemen's Association explained about the Indo-Pak war of 1971 that led to the liberation of Bangladesh and said that the association observes Vijay Diwas every year to pay tributes to the martyrs.
Speaking to media persons, Vijaynath Vittal Shetty, chief coordinator, Shasthavu Shree Bhoothanatheshwara temple said, "It is our responsibility to pay tribute to our armed forces who sacrificed their lives for us. More people should come here and pay tribute. It is sad that only a very few people take part in such programmes."
Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, SP Dr S D Sharanappa, ADC S Kumar, president of Dakshina Kannada Ex-Servicemen's Association Vikram Dutta, general secretary S M Airan, treasurer Col N Balakrishna and many others paid homage by laying wreaths at the memorial.
