Beltangady, Dec 16: Two persons allegedly assaulted a person from another community on claims that he had eve-teased a girl. The incident occured at Dharmasthala on Tuesday December 15. All three persons involved have been arrested and sent to judicial custody.

Following the incident, chaos erupted as locals gathered in large numbers and police had to resort to lathi charge.

It is alleged that Mariswamy from Tamil Nadu, residing in Dharmasthala, eve-teased a girl from another community. On hearing about this, two persons identified as Nasir and Ibrahim allegedly assaulted Mariswamy, who then complained to the police against the duo.

The police took all three - Mariswamy, Nasir and Ibrahim - to the police station. As news spread, persons of a community gathered in front of the police station and demanded that the persons who assaulted Mariswamy should be handed over to them. The mob even came forward to assault the persons in custody. As the situation began to go out of hand, the police led by sub-inspector Sandesh resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

Taking note of the strict action taken by SI Sandesh, the accused as well as the Mariswamy and his supporters tried to reach a compromise through talks.

However, SI Sandesh, who is said to be a strict officer, refused to bow down and based on a complaint filed by the girl's father against Mariswamy, as well as the complaint filed by Mariswamy against Nasir and Ibrahim, he registered cases against all three.

Mariswamy, Nasir and Ibrahim were then officially arrested and produced in court, which remanded them in judicial custody.
