Opposition members suspended from Andhra assembly

Hyderabad, Dec 18 (IANS): All members of opposition YSR Congress Party were on Friday suspended from Andhra Pradesh assembly for stalling the proceedings to demand immediate debate on the call money racket.

Leader of opposition Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy and 54 others were suspended by Speaker Kodela Sivaparasad Rao till special debate on B.R. Ambedkar is completed.

The suspension came as the members of the only opposition party in the house disrupted the proceedings for a second consecutive day, demanding that the call money issue be taken up immediately.

As they continued to surround the speaker's podium and raise slogans, Andhra Pradesh Legislative Affairs Minister Y. Ramakrishnudu moved a resolution for their suspension. The same was adopted by a voice vote.

As the opposition legislators refused to leave the house and continued their protest, the speaker called in marshals, who bodily lifted them out.

No business could be held on the first day of the winter session on Thursday as the YSR Congress stalled the proceedings on the same issue. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) led government, however, said a statement would be made on the issue only after the special debate on Ambedkar was completed.

Since the debate on Ambedkar could not be taken up on Thursday, as soon as the house met for the day, the government insisted that only after the completion of the debate, a statement on the call money issue would be made.

The opposition, however, alleged that the government was running away from debate on call money as TDP leaders were involved in the racket.
