Mangalore, Aug 25: Only one student has joined for MSc in Earth Science and Resource Management (ESRM), a post-graduate course offered by the Department of Marine Geology, Mangalore University, for the academic year 2007-08.

Though the said course was supposed to provide employment opportunities in private and government sectors, only one student joined the course.

Eight applications were received by the department for admissions to the first year, said C Krishnaiah, chairman and reader.

This course began in the academic year 2006-07 after discarding the MSc course in Marine Geology, owing to less number of students seeking admitted. Last year when the course was newly started, all 22 seats were full, he informed. The department has only nine teachers he said.

He further said that the course can be taken up by any science student, and suspected that students might have not understood the course properly.

As the student has shown interest in the course, it cannot be withdrawn and the department will continue to impart lessons to her, he added.
