Mangaluru: Nearly 50 trees being felled at Valencia for road widening

Mangaluru, Dec 22: On the directions of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) several trees along the Valencia - Nandigudda circle stretch were chopped down on Tuesday December 22 for the purpose of widening the road.

It is learnt that about 48 trees along the stretch from Fatima Retreat House will be cut. The MCC has been granted permission by the forest department for the operation, with the condition that saplings will be planted in their stead.

Mayor of MCC Jacintha Alfred speaking to daijiworld said that the trees are being cut for the purpose of widening the stretch. "We have obtained the clearance from the forest department and we will widen the concrete road till the Mannagudda circle," she said.

The district forest officer Hanumanthappa speaking to Daijiworld confirmed the same.

The work on widening the said road is underway from Father Muller Hospital junction from a few days.

    First plant new trees in approprite place, then cut the exiting trees. Infact this should have been done 5-10 yeas back when MCC started to plan widening the road. Don't cut the trees before a new one is planted.

    People will never understand. Some fools constructed roads in Mangalore around 2008 and never thought that when there are good roads you will have more vehicle's and hence these fools should have thought of parking and also the footpath for pedestrian's. Half of the road is used for parking purpose without any space for pedestrian's and at times even risking their lives.

    It is really sad that 50 such huge trees are being cut, Localities in the past had protested and stopped this, they had even written to the minister and concerned authorities to acquire church land and create one more lane on both sides and leave these trees in between as divider to two lanes, MCC easily cuts down trees but incase of a building they never demolish even if it illegal as the owner pays to MCC, even in PVS circle, two huge trees were cut on one side to broaden the road while on the other side where a commercial complex exists that remains untouched, look at the condition of balmatta- bendoorwell road, huge houses on both the sides of the road have made road narrower in the city but no one cares

    The main problem, we do not plan things properly. MUDA /MCC instead of allotting plots to people (many people take the plots to make premium like flats also)to construct dwelling units in areas like Bajpe, Kavoor ,Shakti nagar, they should have asked the builders to construct the high rise residential buildings, markets etc. in these areas, instead of in main city area. Here builders along with MUDA /MCC could have developed proper roads ,drainage & other facilities. Due to this wrong planning now they have to widen the roads by FELLING THE TREES ,increase the sizes of drainage/ drinking water pipes ,laying of additional electricity transmission lines etc. in the main city area. Making correction in existing facilities costs much more than providing the new once. Ultimately the people have to face burden for all the wrong doings of MUDA/MCC by paying more taxes.

    Road widening for development of city is good but all these extra spaces are used by lorries and other heavy vehicles for parking them overnight. This is specially seen opposite St. Anns school pandeshwar and adjacent to Nehru Maidaan main road from Town Hall to RTO. One side of the road always has buses and trucks parked all along. It is surprising indeed that the authorities are turning a blind eye to all this.

    I always used to go on this road with my son and feel i am in Goa, decent road green surrounding churches clean environment. Today my 10 years old son saying "poppa now we are in Mangalore road, not in goa. He also very sad. It is very surprise to know, Catholic local Mayor, MLC Ivon D'souza, MLA Mr.Lobo can't protest it. History always remember in their period, Valencia lost its beauty and greenery.

    It is big tragedy the trees are being cut. Road widening planer can design road even without cutting the trees.
    City of Bangalore is called air conditioned city. plants are centre and both sides of the road.

    Barcelona city in Spain one of the most beautiful cities ever i have seen has full of trees at the centre and sides of the road.

    I have objections in felling the trees from Valencia to Nandigudda.

    Mainly because I was born and raised in this vicinity. First of all the stretch from Val to Nandi is surrounded by churches, schools, ashram and cemeteries and there are no commercial establishments on either side of the road due to this there is no traffic congestion as is evident in the pictures above.

    Most of the residents especially elderly people go for morning walks in this peaceful road.

    Traffic starts getting congested from kankanady onwards towards Bendur, Balmatta etc. Here there are no footpaths even and people are forced to walk on the roads. No parking space either.

    Where there is a genuine need to broaden the road there is no scope and therefore eyes are to cut the trees from Valencia to Nandigudda.

    After cutting the trees, the best that can happen is a motorist coming from Nandigudda will be able to reach upto kankanady little faster maybe 1 minute but thereafter again they have to endure the same congestion so the advantages are negligible.

    Further making a highway in a rather peaceful neighbourhood would be a nightmare for the local residents and they have to quit walking altogether.

    My keen observation travelling to some countries with history is that utilise that extra space by making a path for pedestrians to enjoy their walks and this can be done without cutting even a single tree.

    Trees need to be cut when making a highway or in a commercial area where it can obstruct movement. I do not see any urgency here for time being.

    Anand, very soon you will see the urgency. Number of busses plying on this stretch has quadrupled. The old people doing their morning walks, walk on the road only which is dangerous both for the vehicle drivers and themselves. It is better to have broad roads with footpaths rather than having old trees which will fall during the rains with heavy winds and rainstorms. Think about it.

    Mr. Peter, you have not got my point. There is scope for road expansion here definitely but hardly for about say 1000 metres. I ask how will you widen roads from Kankanady onwards where actual widening is required. Will you demolish the buildings and the malls?

    Secondly when concretisation was done on Bendur road, the concrete was stretched till the gutter and footpath was never made. I fear MCC will repeat the same mistake on this road too i.e. they will broaden the road till it reaches the wall of the school and may not create a footpath going by their past record. Secondly they promise to plant saplings and may do it in the first year but may not do maintenance thereby leaving the saplings to die.

    If you have travelled to Europe (not Gulf) you will find the roads are narrow there too but there is no traffic congestion there. By demolishing the existing bus stops on this road and pushing it little inside will enable free flow of traffic peacefully.

    Precisely written. Your observation is completely correct . In other words, this will create a greater bottleneck from Kankanady onwards which is already a nightmare.

    One solution is to temporarily stop issuing permits to new buses, ricks and private / passenger cars. Another is to not allow buses on this stretch .

    old trees are threat.. they may fall any moment.. nothing must come in the way of development.. same time government must plant 2 plants for each tree cut.. People want nature to be preserved only in government lands.. so many flats and commercial buildings r there in Mangalore i haven't seen at least a single tree in any compound :) they concrete the surroundings to park their vehicles but dont have little place for single tree and protest against development..

    What a blessing to all! Long overdue. Those trees have completed their purpose for which they were planted. They were good when people were walking to run their errands. Who is walking these days? Have seen people boarding a bus from Retreat house bus stop to Jerosa school bus stop. Also what a tremendous increase in the number of busses plying from Mangaladevi and Morgan gate. MCC has done a good job. Hats off to them. True instead of one old tree 4 can be planted for those die hard fresh air breathers. The old trees were nothing but a hazard for those walking during the rains as the branches would be torn apart and fall. Come on be reasonable and support this action of MCC. Well done.

    The height of all foolishness : Between Morgan's Gate and Mangalore Club, a distance of 300 meters, the MCC has constructed 6 road humps. There has never been an accident so far. This is a record and should come out in the Guinness world record book. I wonder as to who's brilliant idea it was considered and done ? Infact this would create accidents because the street lighting is very bad / poor.

    Many of these trees are too old and hollow inside ( pokul in konkani ) as seen in the pictures. They are very dangerous too esp. with schools around. These rain trees are fast growing and new similar plants can be planted on the side of the new extended concrete road.

    Only hope that there won't be any silly / idiotic protest ( SAVE ME ) like last time.

    We have to pay a certain price for development / infrastructure. Nothing wrong in felling a few trees to widen / construct a road. How many trees and plants have we cut in our own property to build a house or construct a building ? How many wooden doors and windows do we have in our own house ? The world will not come to an end.

    There are a few ( uneducated in the subject ) people who have become environmentalists overnight. This is for their cheap political publicity.

    Forget these 50 trees. I have planted on a barren hill over 200 coconut / 700 rubber sapplings in my farm recently at Gurpur.

    Rubber is not economical these days. Instead go for teak wood sandal wood. Will be a huge fixed deposit after 50 years. Think of inter crop or boundary cultivation.

    Please go ahead and widen the roads....trees can be planted in place of the old ones. 4 in the place of 1. Should be planted soon after the completion of the work and be watered properly. Narrow and unscientific roads, dividers and Humps are causing lot of accidents.I'm sure many with the low ground clearance cars have had bad experiences on unscientific road humps.

    It should not be that widening of roads are merely for vehicles.First consideration should be pedestrian/cycle path.Planting of 4 trees in lieu of 1 cut tree seems impossible as many places just side of the road high rise residential buildings ,markets etc have come .If MCC can plant one tree for 4 cut trees that itself is a big thing as they only have given permission for these buildings & now they can't plant trees inside the buildings while widening the roads.

    Sad to see the trees been cut. There was no need to broaden this road as there is no much traffic only a good Concreate road construction would have been sufficient. They have cut the trees but when the road broadening work will begin?

    you and i can't decide.. itz upto government.. first lets see how much sappling v have planted in our locality.. or watered them.. so many trees r cut to construct flats but not a single suppling is planted after construction..

    Silly comment from India First.Didnt you realise that the vegetables you are eating are plants that are CUT and KILLED for you to eat, and if you are a meat eater its the animals that are CUT and KILLED for you to eat. Mangalore needs roads widening which will also lead to development.

    Philip, let MCC broaden the roads in hampankatta where they can sacrifice govt land like govt hospital, nehru maidan, have good decent roads that will last longer, proper footpath before going to valencia.

    Infact this stretch has no chance for becoming commercial street as it belongs to our catholic diocese -school, seminary, ashram, jeppu workshop. These trees were added beauty to this road and have left the area with coolness.
