Modi's impromptu Lahore visit: Was the meeting pre-planned?

By Anjali Ojha

New Delhi, Dec 26 (IANS): The 'surprise visit' by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Pakistan on Nawaz Sharif's birthday was hailed as a diplomatic triumph everywhere.

But was the visit as impromptu as has been billed by Modi and his officials?

The presence of Indian steel tycoon Sajjan Jindal in Pakisan would seem to bely that. Jindal is said to have been instrumental in setting up another meeting between Modi and Sharif -- in November 2014 in Kathmandu during the SAARC summit.

Sajjan Jindal, brother of former Congress MP Naveen Jindal, has ties with prime minister Sharif's family.

He also has business relations with the Ittefaq Group of Industries, a Pakistani integrated steel producer with major operations in Punjab, which was founded by industrialist Muhammad Sharif, father of Nawaz Sharif.

Sajjan Jindal, in a tweet had announced his presence in Lahore. "In Lahore to greet PM Navaz Sharif on his birthday (sic)," the tweet had said.

Sajjan's JSW, and Naveen's Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) are part of a consortium led by state-owned SAIL, along with Monnet Ispat and AFISCO (Afghan Iron), which was keen to obtain from Pakistan 'right of way' to transport iron ore by road from Hajigak iron ore deposits in the Bamian, Afghanistan to Karachi. From the Pakistani port the ore was aimed to be shipped to western and southern parts of India.

As per an agreement between the India and Afghanistan in 2011, the Indian companies and AFISCO would construct a one-million-tonne-a-year steel mill and develop the 1.8-billion-tonne iron-ore reserves at Hajigak, which boasts of good quality ore with over 60 percent iron content.

The plan has been stuck for long because of Taliban control of the Hajigak area, which is about 140 km west of Kabul.

When Sharif came to India for the swearing in ceremony of the newly elected National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in May 2014, he had attended a tea party hosted by Jindal.

Sharif drew flak back home for attending the tea party, although this was largely ignored in India.

The Imran Khan party Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf said in a statement that going to a steel magnate's house for tea, when he couldn't find time to meet the Hurriyat leaders "reflected the misplaced priorities of Sharif."

According to an account in the book 'This Unquiet Land' by journalist Barkha Dutt, Sajjan Jindal was instrumental in fixing the Kathmandu meeting the two leaders from the sub-continent.

"On reaching Kathmandu, the prime minister (Modi) had called Sajjan Jindal and asked him to hop on to the earliest flight to Nepal. Jindal was asked to discreetly reach out to his 'friend' across the border. Subsequently, the two prime ministers were able to meet quietly in the privacy of Jindal's hotel room in Nepal, where they are said to have spent an hour together," the book says.

Foreign office officials, though, denied that any such meeting took place.

On Friday, following the meeting between the two leaders, Dutt tweeted: "Dear @MEAIndia, you denied my book's scoop on sajjanjindal as conduit for PMs meet in Nepal. Today he's in Lahore."

Foreign Office spokesman Vikas Swarup replied back in a tweet, calling it "another baseless story."

The Congress party had alluded to the arrangement by Jindal when it criticised Modi's Lahore stopover saying the visit was aimed at aiding a private business house.

"We are very clear that the prime minister is there to promote only private business interests and not India's national interest which should be supreme," Congress spokesman Anand Sharma had said.

But from all indications, the unprepared and unscripted meeting was hardly that.

What's your reliable sources' take on bringing Dawood to the book, retrieving black money from overseas, applying breaks to ever sliding Rupee and our exports? Remember, expanding business empires of few Gujju buddies doesn't eradicate poverty in the country, it in fact widens the gap between haves and have nots further.

..while whole world/international media appreciating MODI & debating how positively it will effect our relationship with pakistan & its impact on Asia, our some of the TRP hungry media discusses whether its preplaned or spontoneous!..once again the theory is floated by non other than great BURKHA DUTT of NDTV, she refers a Mr.JINDAL who is close to Sharief and he was present at Lahore for Sahrief's grand daughters marriage(if he is very close, then what is surprising if he is in Lahore!)..By the way, JINDAL is a Congi and his younger brother also a Congi/close freind of VP, presently he is running pillar to pillar on coal case!..BURKHA DUTT found a easy connection to float this theory so that Congress can get a issue..anyways, she & her masters failed infront of MODI..

Ramesh, its not only discussed in Indian media whether Modiji's visit is pre planned or not but even in America and Pakistan!!!. I was reading Pakistani news papers (online) DAWN and THE NATION, and both have written editorials about how the visit was planned during Sushma's visit couple of weeks back and how it was kept secret for maybe security reasons!!!.

So do you think the theory again was floated by Burkha in Pakistan and America!?. You write all speculations without any base!. Do you know, Make in India Modiji has a Apple Iphone made in China to click selfies!?. All ullu banaying because he knows people like you support him anyway! !!

    @ Ramesh,

It appears somewhere the balance is lost in your opinion/ views/comments and /or arguments…!!...??

Is Nawaz Sharif’s relationship (that too to attend his grand daughter's wedding) is important more than the interest of the country...? or is it a reason to pursue countries interest..?, can we find such personal gesture by our honorable PM Namo within Hindustan (For ex: any auspicious occasion in eminent Hindustani Muslim leaders house.., though we know the iftar hosted by the honorable President of Hindustan was bunked in the past).

Though I may be wrong, in my opinion ….,

Namo is either trying to poach the recent success achieved by Smt Sushma swaraj in diplomacy with PAK (which otherwise all through the initial period was handled by the PMO for reasons better known to them) ...,

    or

Is this new found friendship is due to international pressure on both the leaders.

    or

To facilitate a conducive environment for foreign investors to invest in Hindustan as we saw off late PAK was talking of not hesitating use of their nuclear capabilities in response to hard talk by their Hindustani counterpart.

There are many angles to think on this whole (hole) episode including the invisible presence &/or patronage of Sajjan Jindal. This is not a casual b'day/wedding day visit there may be something more to hide.

The nation wants know.., ullu banaawing don’t work….!!!

No..i think he decided to teach a lesson to AIYYAR & KURSHID..AIYYAR for the last few month bashing MODI in Pakistan/India saying he dont want peace with pakis, now totally shocked & confused..High chance of AIYYAR slipping to coma..whatever you may write, you have no reason to hate him after he becoming PM..forget about elections, win or loss part of the game..but He shown how a Indian leader should be..its not secret that 2014 LS election was a polarised one, but not a single program he launched to appease majority(his voter either dont want it)..compare your secular SIDU & communal MODI..one is going behind liquor & appeasing(even it lead to death/riots) from day one & another one is restlessly behind nation building,FDI,Jobs for all..

Doesn't a PM have better things to than whiling away his precious time and energy TEACHING LESSONS to a couple of guys in the almost non existent opposition? If this is true, your great leader is as puerile as yourself Ramesh. Before echoing your Master's favorite words Nation building, FDI, Jobs etc etc, just face the ground reality..Why our exports are dwindling, why the Rupee is not recovering?

There's nothing impromptu about Modi. All his speeches, interviews, gestures are premeditated and well rehearsed to the minute detail. He attempted impromptu stuff once with Karan Thapar which couldn't last more than couple of minutes. It's there in Youtube if anyone is interested to witness his impromptu prowess.
