Patna (Bihar), Aug 29: On Monday, August 28 a man — identified as Salim — was caught trying to snatch a woman's chain in the Nath Nagar area of Bhagalpur. A mob soon gathered and thrashed the man mercilessly after tying his hands at the back. Some members of the crowd also kicked and punched him in the face.

Salim was later tied to a motorcycle and dragged around. One of the footage of the scene shows a policeman riding the motorcycle to which he was tied. All this while, the policemen present there did nothing to stop the mob.

National television channels are presently fully concentrating on this incident, as sympathy for the chain-snatcher is pouring in from all parts of the nation. Though the concerned police officer, who was on duty when the incident took place and has since been suspended from duty, the opposition it seems has seized the opportunity and is using and playing it up as a Muslim card.  Quickly the whole unfortunate incident has been turned into a political issue

The Bihar administration seized of the political ramifications of the matter has sent a high level team to Bhagalpur, not only to probe the incident but also to ensure that communal flames don't flare up just like in 1989 which in turn can have serious national consequences.

Bihar Home Secretary, Afzal Amanullah informed, " As soon as we got this news, the
said police officer was suspended. An enquiry is on to investigate why the incident took place."

Just a day after the chain-snatcher was brutally beaten up by a furious mob in the Bhagalpur district, Bihar, the incident has now taken serious political twist.

The battle lines are drawn and RJD activists are out on the streets of Patna trying to ignite the religious sentiments of people and corner the Nitish Kumar government.

Stated a shocked RJD leader, Shyam Rajak, "The way in which this Muslim boy has been treated is so horrible, that I cannot find words to describe it."

The boy, who has been at the center of the controversy, is lying in a Bhagalpur hospital and is now showing signs of recovery albeit slowly. But the moot point is whether the wounds of his humiliation will ever really heal.

In the meanwhile, IG-Headquarters and spokesperson for Bihar Police, Anil Sinha, has admitted that there had been a gross violation of human rights.

"We have condemned the incident in no uncertain manner. We are as horrified as any right thinking citizen in the country would be and have already taken action by suspending the erring policemen. We have also registered an FIR against them. This is a gross violation of human rights and we stand by that," he admitted.

The incident has put the Bihar government in a tight spot. It will now have to answer some embarrassing questions once the National Human Rights Commission team arrives from Delhi to probe the incident.

For crying out loud!! An atrocity is an atrocity! It doesn't matter whether the thief or civilians or police are Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, or even atheist! what the hell is going on? It doesn't matter if he killed your mother- no one should take matters into their own hands, or treat even the most despicable human being in such a manner.

The man stole- right thing to do- hand him over to the police unharmed and promptly put into a prison with a sentence that is deserving of the crime committed. We should draw the line for such abuse for even the trivial offences. If he did something wrong and remains unrepentful, God shall handle it all in the end. Such people, and I can't help but think of the behaviour of the Mob in Julius Caesar, are senseless and foolish to think that they can wrong from right in a fit of hotheaded-ness. Trust in the law and God. Alright dear Vishal's of Udupi's?

First of all the real culprit is the chain snatcher. The punishment for this was not as brutal as chopping limbs, removing eyes, beheading , stoning to death etc. But our corrupt politicians playing all vote bank politics.

Indeed a horrible punishment and new to Indians. We don’t want this type of punishment to be an eye opener for Indian criminals, although it is not as brutal as stoning to death, chopping limbs, public shootings / beheading, removing eyes etc.for crimes, as followed by some.

Some readers advised others here not to make this as a communal issue. But unfortunately our (pseudo) secular media (CNN-IBN & NDTV) & politicians of Bihar are first to give the communal tag to this incident. The way CNN-IBN & NDTV displayed the image & report of that ill-fated chain snatcher day and night reminded me of the folding boards in front of some small hotels in Mangaluru which display “Meals Ready” (ooTa thayaride) 24 hrs a day, even when the hotel is closed!!!.

If you had gone through the reporting style of CNN-IBN you will definitely get an impression that snatching chain was his fundamental right and all Indians are responsible for his act, because he did that crime out of his poverty!!! Agree? Chak de India!!

The readers who believe that what police and public did to a petty thief, was right and proper, I like to ask them to do the same to the politicians who are bigger "chain snatchers" they snatch your chains, your basic rights, your votes, your moral etc., without having been noticed by you. You, along with police, respect them, garland them, feel proud in taking photographs with them.

There is a Hindi proverb that says 'laton ke bhoot baaton se nahi maante'. The police have set a good example to the thugs and thieves saying that such incidents won't pass on unnoticed from nowon.

The media's perspective has been wrong in this issue. Instead of showcasing that issues such as this would be severly dealt with henceforth, they are all set to gain sympathies for the chain snachers. Is it because he belongs to the minority class? If yes, the media is taking sides.

It is surprising to note so many readers reacting to this incident.I feel such punishment should be given to the goondas, the so called moral police and rowdies of our two districts.Unfortunately our state govt instead of punishing the goondas, they have joined together with the anti social elements by withdrawing 51 criminal cases lodged against the sangh parivar rowdies.

If we have people like some readers in our society then these type of incidents are commom.

You said its a media issue and its right punishment, I am asking you who give  people the right to judge this? Is it written somewhere in Indian constitution? Or its your own constitution? Media is doing their job, if the news is in your favour you dont talk about media otherwise its a Media Issue!

If the same guy murdered the woman for the chain, then I think no one might have raised this incident. Punishment should be like this so that other's who want to rob think 100 times.

This is an example of a democratic society gravitating to rule by mob mentality than rule of law. Its ironic to see cops leading the mob. These guys are supposed to enforce the rule of law , I thought.

He was punished so severely for snatching chain because he was without AK-47,If he was with some weapons he would not have been given such a treatment and carried in police vehicle with escorts.

Why this media showing this much sympathy to this robbing incident. If they had real sympathy they should have intervened instead of catching it on the camera right at the incident place. People should punish these troublemakers at the spot instead of sending to jail.

It surprising to see that all of the media network showing sympathy to the chain snatcher. As per me public & the concerned police officer to be appreciated for the action they have taken at the same spot. Why this media is making all these issues a big ??? It shows that media supporting the robbers. It's a right punishment.

This is barbaric. One of the most uncivilized acts of so called the 'civilized' society. Neither the police nor people have any right to deal in this way with anyone, be it a chain snatcher or a murderer. The question is not whether he is a muslim, a hindu or a christian. As a human being he demands his respect. The poor young man became a victim to the anger of the policemen and the people just because he tried to snatch a chain.

Among the assailants there could have been hundreds who committed more serious crimes and 'fortunately' escaped without being caught. They cannot be claiming themselves just and civilized. Moreover, 'who are you to judge and punish your neighbour', be it a thief or terrorist? In a democratic nation there is judiciary to do that. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!!"-Jesus

The police concerned has been suspended for his tough action here. Elsewhere, the police who shook hands with prisoner Sanjay Dutt, also has been suspended for being nice to the actor. Eitherway, it is difficult. That is why some police are smart. They are quite inactive. They will get all the promotions and medals.

This scene is nothing compared with the scenes / drama that takes place in the Parliament hall. These type of scene are normal in Mumbai Railway stations. Someone rightly said, if we hand over to the police, then both gain – one gets free other goes free.

Everyone makes mistake in this world. It doesn’t mean that people treat a person like this. Criminals are not borne, made criminals. Video purely says that those who are beating him are real criminals. Really we can not see such videos. Either criminals or no criminals , first of all are human beings. SO we have to condemn such incidents rather than supporting.

The attitude of both public and police was ridiculous. Such things happen only when some petty thieves and crooks are involved. Do the public and the police dare react in the same manner if the person would have been a known "rowdy" with a backing of any local politician? Our reactions vary and according to situations.

This surely is a sad incident, and we, the public and the police should be ashamed of this act.
