Mangaluru, Dec 30: Famous drama actress of yesteryears, Evelyn Marie D'Silva has bagged the prestigious Karavali Konkans Kala Prashasti for the year 2015.
The award will be presented on January 9, 2016 at 6.30 pm at St Sebastian Platinum Jubilee Auditorium in Bendore. Chief guest for the event will be Fr Prashanth Madtha, well-known columnist and director of Fatima Retreat House and guest of honour will be Fr Antony Serrao, the parish priest of St Sebastian’s Church, Bendor. The award comprises a citation, a momento, a shawl and Rs 50,000 cash.
Evelyn D'Silva – A profile
Evelyn D'Silva was born on February 11, 1926 as the daughter of late Dominic Rosario and Clotilda D'Silva at Surakodi, Kulshekar. She did her SSLC from St Agnes and later obtained IITC from St Ann's Institute in city. She married Felix F D'Silva and is blessed with 7 children. She served as teacher at Rosario primary school for 2 years and later at Aloysius primary school for 17 years.
Contribution to the field of Konkani drama
About 50 years back only males used to play female characters in Konkani plays. When actresses were introduced, it brought a major change in the Konkani stage. But the actresses needed confidence, commitment and above all courage to face the community of those days. Evelyn D'Silva had been a pioneer actress on Konkani stage.
Evelyn has acted in several Konkani dramas, some of which were 'Amchem Daaiz', 'Aunkwar Akai', 'Moushi', 'Bondhivaan', 'Kristachem Zonon', 'Sardaranchi Sinol', 'Shegunanchi Sunn', 'Mai Naka Adainaka', 'Misther', 'Pohilwaan Pondith', 'Lognacho Baandh', 'Vidhov' and 'Haanv Nirapraadi'. 'Somyaacho Pashanv' drama was staged 12 times in 1954 and 1955 and another 10 times in 1965. She played the character of Mary Magdalene in this ever popular religious drama.
Evelyn bagged the best actress award for 'Moushi' where she played a mother's role. Konkani Natak Sabha, Mangaluru and Kala Sampath have honoured her in the past considering her service to the Konkani drama field. Evelyn was honoured during the 11th Akhil Bharath Konkani Sahitya Parishad Sammelan. She was also bestowed with Dakshina Kannanda district Rajyotsava Award.
