Mangalore, Aug 30: A gas-laden bullet tanker which was on its way to Tamil Nadu from MRPL went off the road and rolled down the defile by the roadside at Jeppinamogaru near here in the wee hours of Thursday August 30.

Eye witnesses speaking to this correspondent said that the mishap took place when the tanker driver tried to avert a possible collision with a bus which was speeding from the opposite direction.  However, owing to slight drizzle, the road was already slipping and the tanker driver immediately lost control over the vehicle, as a result of which it rolled down into the defile.

While the driver of the vehicle escaped with minor injuries, the cleaner Sanganath from Tamil Nadu sustained severe injuries and fractured his leg too. Owing to the impact of the fall, the tanker was badly damaged and the gas from the tanker started to leak.

In fact the tanker got entangled with an electrical pole wire and there were few sparks causing panic for a while.  However, fire fortunately died down on its own, before the diesel started spilling out from the tank of the tanker, thus averting a major disaster. Immediately without delay fire engines were called and they stopped a major blast just on time.

But the problem is not entirely fixed as of now as gas still continues to leak from the tanker. Hence MRPL, the parent company has been informed to check the gas flow. The current status of the incident is that MRPL fire engine personnel have reached the spot to assess the situation and empty the tanker of gas before it causes anymore damage.
