Operation enters third day, more forces rushed to Pathankot air base

Pathankot (Punjab), Jan 4 (PTI): The operation against militants holed up at Pathankot air base entered the third day today after explosions and firing continued intermittently overnight.

Security forces had yesterday killed one of the at least two terrorists on the second day of the attack in which seven security personnel lost their lives including a Lieutenant Colonel of the NSG. Four terrorists were eliminated on Saturday when they had struck at the air base.

The operation stretched through the night with sounds of gunfire and explosions continuing till around 10 AM today after which they have ceased. Attack helicopters were still flying over the area.

More quick response teams have been rushed to the site.

Defence sources had last night said that one more terrorist was killed while another was injured.

The holed up militants were discovered in the forested area on the backside of the air base from where they are reported to have entered.

Air Commodore JS Dhamoon, Air Officer Commanding at the base, had said seven security men--one Garud commando, one NSG officer and five personnel of Defence Security Corps(DSC) have been martyred inthe operation. Seventeen security personnel were also injured till now.

Lt Col E K Niranjan, a member of the NSG's Bomb Disposal Squad and a Kerala resident, died after he succumbed to injuries which he sustained while he was trying to retrieve a live grenade from the body of a dead terrorist. Four other security men were also injured in this explosion.

Three Defence Security Corps (DSC) personnel also succumbed to injuries at the hospital here during the intervening night of January 2 and 3. Garud commando Gurusewak Singh and two members of the DSC were killed in the gunbattle on Saturday at the air base, located barely 35 km from the Indo-Pak border.

"We are sure that still there are at least two more terrorists as firing have come from two different places. But we are not sure whether there are some more. We will come to know the number of terrorists only after the completion of the operation and body count," Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi had told a press conference in Delhi on Sunday.

This is a eye opener. Terrorists have targeted a highly secure, sensitive defense installation, which was supposed to be well protected even in normal days. Mid December to January is always high alert time and there should have been higher level of alertness.

It is shocking and unbelivable that the gunfight is going on from last 3 days.

Modi Govt., has proved itself to be highly incompetative and unbelivably lethargic, more lethargic than congress. Why?

Despite being chosing a soft target like hotel, no red alerts, no appropriate intelligence inputs, not as prepared as on today, on 26/11, UPA silenced the cowards from pakistan within 3 days. Yes, there was more civilian bloodshed, but it was because the terrorists choose such target, unlike this time.

What seems to me is Modi is facing a Kargil kind of situation. In Kargil, if air force was used to bomb terrorist hideouts, many army casualties could have been avoided. But BJP got nervous to airforce. I believe our defense forces probably crippled with similar decision from Modi.

..we should know that first 3 casualties happened in soldiers rest room where soldiers ill prepared..one martyrd during action..But other casualties incl., a NSG commando from KERALA is just bad luck since a grenade of dead terrorist blasted while removing his body..Army also clarified for long duration taken for the whole operation, statement says there is advisory from defense minister PARIKKAR not to take unnecessary risk, avoid casualty & take your own time..

" Cross-border strike: Army enters Myanmar to hit Naga Militants"

Without prejudice & by not questioning the ability & mighty capability of our Hindustan's Army, - I want to know from the (then tom toming & ballooned) bhakt's - why such kind of operation not adopted now in this case...?

Girish bhai, we cannot compare the two. I think the difference between Nagas and Pak is that one is a group from within Indian borders (hiding in Myanmar) with simple weaponry and the other is from across the border with support from an establishment (ISI and/or Pak army and/or Pak govt.) with access to sophisticated weaponry along with with the threat of a NUCLEAR war which would be disastrous for both nations.

The paramount point here is that nuclear power is in the hands of the un-reliable & un-trust worthy ...,

With this reality...., - birthday wish diplomacy success is short lived. If i am not mistaken to understand the hidden truth, the nuclear button is not in the hands of Nawaz sheriefji.

Further if we go back to the quoted news title that appeared aprox 6-8 mths back about the attack on poorly armed Naga Militants in Myanmar, the couple of high profile political leaders beaming/chest thumping show offs in print & tele media may be by now would have realized the point which you highlighted in your response.

This is for those who doubt the capabilities of our armed forces.
I found this in twitter, one person enquired his friend a Maj General in army about the delay in operations, below is what he has written…

    Quote

Asked my Maj Gen friend why the ops are so slow?

No point in blowing up the base in 5 minutes to catch 7 terrorists, is there?”

Combing operations are painfully slow and thorough specially if the area is more than 2000acres.. Don't doubt the forces!” He added.
Because our Soldiers have to follow a protocol and those terrorist are free to shoot… and don’t forget it’s a strategically sensitive base"
Well, the retaliatory tactics by our people had to be extremely controlled to prevent collateral damage and hence the protracted response"

“In operations like these PM & Chiefs are advised to keep quiet for the strategy to work… it’s preferred to catch them alive"

But people are getting impatient” I informed him. “I am sorry my friend but only civilians can question like this” He concluded.

    Unquote.

The factors listed by Maj Gen are not of strategic secret and any common man can think of it.

Unfortunately, in DW there are few “uncommon intellectual’s” people who do not understand these simple factors and started questioning capability of our soldiers by setting at safe confines of their house /office.

While browsing, I found those points and thought this would clear the doubts of those “uncommon intellectual’s” people and they stop doubting our soldiers determination.

But a minority section will lose their existence if Pak befriends India. Those are the people who is carrying out these terror attacks to destabilize the peace initiative which Mr. Modi has started.

Please for God’s sake don’t try to play your cheap politics everywhere.

Today morning what I read is since the terrorists are already cornered, the security forces are trying to capture them alive.
Capturing a terrorist alive will help India to argue better against Pakistan with proof in international forums.

What I read might by wrong and there might be some other reasons for delay, which might never come out for the national security reason.

However, let us not put pressure on defense forces and restrain from making cheap comments and allow them to do their work in their own time.

Announcing the visit in advance and having a longer stay would increase the risk by giving more time to extremist groups to plan and execute an attack. Extremist elements have infiltrated everywhere there.

Terrorists & ISI was not happy with Modi- Shariff peace process. They wanted to derail the peace talks. If India stall the peace process initiated by modi, these terrorist's plan will be fulfilled. I feel India & pak must continue peace talks, so that ISI , Pak Army & Pak govt fight with each other.

    Dear Jeevan,

I do not support any but the person.
Modi already acted visiting Pakistan and Pakistan confirmed with reaction.
Like others many, I too had great hope with PM Modi & HM.Singh....where ended is eating biriyani.
We will keep fighting for those parties like Congress,BJP, etc. hailing like Kings BUT will not even support or help the martyred solder's left out distressed families....wake up man.
Remember Solders die like worms and leaders live like Kings.

The names that you've mentioned are run of the mill opposition. Their begging or pleading shouldn't make any difference especially after the mighty Modi - Jindal - Shareef rendezvous, or was it just a business meeting and had nothing to with so called peace process?

    Jeevan,

If Indiraji was PM today, imagine her going secretly to a marriage in Paki PM's family and enjoying Biriyani ???

You are talking about Manishankar and the rest, do you think Modi cursed Nawaz and left ?

Do you think Modi was whispering bad words in Nawaz's ears in Paris ?

Lydia, please do some research before babbling out. It was the same Indira who returned parts of Kashmir back to Pakistan after our army had won it in the 1971 war. Regarding her father, the less said then better. We are paying for the follies committed by the father daughter duo.

Sure one can expect a war with the enemy just before 2019 elections in a last ditch attempt to get voters on their side to avoid being kicked out of power if they realize that their poster boy's 'wave' is punctured.
